Day 1 again :(
Have you thought about non 12 step programmes like Smart or LifeRing?
If there are no local meetings, there may be online ones?

I've got some ideas for what you could say James:
"I plan on attending an AA meeting today"
"I have made an appointment with a (counselor/doctor/addiction specialist) to assess my health and drinking and formulate a plan for sobriety"
There are others but you get my point, right? The difference this time has to be doing rather than thinking. I can't even count the number of times I thought through what I might do to get sober in my head ( on the way to the store to buy more beer ). You've gotta take action - make it happen!

Both have online meetings and readings, you don't need to attend local meetings. And you don't need your doctor to tell you that - we already did and you can start reading about them right now if you choose ;-)
I had four days as of yesterday, but I'm back to square one. At the very least, you're still trying. That's all you can do. Best of luck to you! Keep posting and stay inspired. We are here to help.
I don't think my dad could stop drinking and he isn't an alcoholic. He drinks every day but only 3 drinks a day maybe 4 tops. He is 60 years old and its part of his routine, I think he would be very aggravated not to be able to have drinks when he gets home from work or on vacation.
Sobriety is a prize trying for again and again (x 100 times) and then some. Remember as a child it would have taken you over a year to walk. Somethings are worth pursuing and breaking free from any addiction means it has no power over you.
What you have James is Hope.
Its is very infectious and we are rooting for you.

The av creeping in telling me why can't I have a day 1. It's not fair, I want to be forgiven and start again to sink in to that oblivion abyss. What about me.
I'm okay now, I got that off my chest, I don't want a day 1 anymore. Sorry for my outburst.x

The religious/higher power aspect, the criticism over success rates, the group setting...the powerless over alcohol thing...I'm not convinced I am powerless over alcohol, or that anybody really is. I'm not saying it doesn't work for some people, just not everyone.
Sobriety is an inside job, and so however we may decide to take advantage of our sobriety also requires change from within more importantly then whatever help is externally available. Its trite and simplistic but absolutely true - nothing changes if nothing changes.
Without real and importantly essential internal changes, there is no practical way a person can morph from a drunk into a successfully sober guy happily living life to his fullest. There are no substitutes for such internal change. Did I say none?
