Football and I really want to drink
Football and I really want to drink
No lie, within a 10 minute walk there are 4 7-11''s, 5 grocery store, CVS, Walgreens, and 2 specialty beer shops (central Richmond). I'm sitting here sober watching the game but it keeps hitting me "you could get at least a tall boy and be back in 10 minutes". I'm trying really hard to just stay put and not go out.
Watching the football too . . . get something non alcoholic in your hand, something to drink as a substitute, I find sitting with nothing makes things worse, I have a mug of tea beside me!! . . . I also at halftime intend to get some fresh air for a few minutes which always helps to clear the head from all those feelings!!
The craving will pass!! hang in there!!

Getting sober is about making new habits. Remind yourself that the vast majority of people who watch sports are not alcoholics knocking back drink after drink. Sure, lots of drinkers have turned the game into a drinking ritual, but you don't have to.
The Patriots' performance may drive me to drink!
Seriously, I've enjoyed these past two weekends watching football without drinking. I'm also looking forward to be properly rested for the start of the week tomorrow morning.
Stick it out this time, ncog. See how it suits you.
Best,
ODog

Old habits die hard, but they do die. Dude it's gonna be weird for awhile, I'm not gonna lie to you, but if you can keep it together and stick to your guns in half a year or so you'll be sitting fit, happy and sober and maybe explaining the secret of your success to some other guy on this board who could use a good word.

I know if it was me going to a 7-11 for one tall boy, I'd end up walking out with at least a 12 pack, you know, just in case I wanted another one and didn't want to miss any of the game.
I picked up an 18 pack two weekends ago, passed out and missed most of the games. I was really p####d off the next day. Not worth it.

It's nice to have a supporting group of
members here online taking each minute
at a time while watching the game on
my laptop and big screen tv. and not
drinking poison that could and would
destroy any of us.
Stay close to recovery support in early
recovery or many yrs. sober. It doesn't
matter how many one days at a time
we have sober behind us, what counts
the most is today.
Yesterday is gone forever, tomorrow hasn't
arrived yet. If you can stay sober today ,
then tomorrow, whatever you did today
to not drink, then do the same thing
tomorrow.
As long as there isn't any alcohol to reach
for in my home, then I can breath easy,
relax, enjoy the game and be proud of
not killing myself or anyone else.

This is exactly it isn't it.
Your brain is making you a proposition that you can drink one bottle and watch the game. No more.
Ask yourself do you really want just one beer. Are you thirsty? Get a glass of water.

Still watching the game. Sober. If I go get a beer, it will turn into 'I should get a 12 pack'.
Don't want that. I'd rather sit alone at home and be sober. People keep calling to come to a bar. I'll just get wasted and argue about Tom Brady and Manning.
PS, go Denver (coming from a Redskins fan)

I don't really follow the main American sports but one thing that doesn't help that I notice when I see it on TV are the ads that advertise beer. They do that because their target audience are drinking males.
My solution is some awesome jungle juice recipe that contains no alcohol. I think it's a punch that contains various fruits and spices and can be housed in a large canister for a group of people to enjoy. In other words, start a new tradition.
