NA V's AA V's Hybrid
I identify as an alcoholic at AA because it teaches me to be part of the group and not unique. I could call myself an alcoholic/addict, or any number of things, but simply identifying as an alcoholic helps me the most to blend in.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate your replies and insights. One of the great things about this site is the openness and diversity of our individual choice of recovery.
For the sake and respect of the AA meetings, I will now only identify as an alcoholic.
In the big picture it is not a biggy.
I am very aware of the indoctrinated dogma style of some AA members and their potential judgements of me if they should became aware of my hybrid style of recovery.
For them anything that would deviate from AA 12 step is sure to meet with certain doom.
However even those people have something to say and things that I can learn and relate to.
Even when I first started drinking I was aware that it had the potential to open a pandora's box. Silly me.
It was and did awaken my hibernating AV. Albeit now just to a more socially acceptable drug.
This time, in this early stage of recovery I really want to shore up loopholes for potential relapse.
In my RR, AVERT style it is important that when address my AV & say "I will never drink again and I will never change my mind" that I don't have even the slightest feeling of disingenuousness or hollowness and for now an AA meeting a couple of times a month is helping me.
Real people and real faces with addiction and recovery stories.

OK, I give up. I've researched AA, NA, RR (AVRT), SMART, CR, and a bunch of others, but what is AVERT, as it applies to alcohol/addiction recovery?
The only AVERT with which I'm familiar is the international HIV/AIDS charity.
