Reasons to stay sober

I'm having a tiny little mental collapse lately, which makes my thinking confused. So I thought it might be helpful to ask you people on SR to help me make a list, like so:

I should stay sober because if I drink...

-- I can't have a nice chat about music with my son
-- I won't take care of my basic needs like hygiene and eating
-- There is no possibility of me ever being anything of value to anyone again.

What would you add?

Kat60 01-13-2014 09:00 PM

--I can't remember the great memories the rest of my family is making

--I can't ever live up to my own potential

--I can't drive

--I can't be trusted to do the next right thing

Oh God, the list could get so long!!!!
I could keep that going all night but I'm sleepy now... Oh yea, that's another thing!!! LOL!

--I can't get any healthy sleep

Night!

I read this page, because if I have one little drink... I could have any of this happen to me

I lost whole years of my life...no poetic license there. Whole years I cannot remember.

I remember most of my drinking years, not all the days, but a part of me wishes I hadn't.

OK I screwed this up. Very characteristic of me lately. I am TRYING to be positive. Yes, I've forgotten/wasted large quantities of my life. That was then. What can be now?

Retry:
I should stay sober because if I do NOT drink...

-- I can have nice chats about music with my son
-- I WILL take care of my basic needs like hygiene and eating
-- There IS a possibility of me ever being something of value to anyone again.

What can I hope for?

Dee74 01-13-2014 09:29 PM

OK sorry lol.

It's wonderful being the person I always wanted to be, and it's great knowing that at any time I will be capable and can respond to anything that's happening.

thanks for that -- i'm getting cranky. maybe true surrender will mean allowing myself to become a cantankerous old lady "I should stay sober because if I don't drink i can be a crotchety old broad who pokes fun at the world." ;) -- sarah

A good night sleep
Working out and eating healthy
Doing what I say I'm going to do
Being reliable
Helping others
Setting goals and actually achieving them
Being there for other people
Showing up and working a good program
Having purpose
Liking myself
Having self worth
Enjoying the company of other people
Setting and maintaining boundaries
Having healthy relationships
Saving money
Being in the present moment
Wanting to live
Continuing to learn and improve myself
Regaining trust of myself and others
Having the confidence to do what's right
Waking up in the morning ready to face the day
Having gratitude for what I have
Setting myself up for success
Putting my strengths to good use
Accepting things as they are
Accepting people for who they are
Gaining strength from a higher power
Developing empathy
Having the ability to be kind
Keeping connected with people
Taking good care of my pets
Being respectful towards others and myself
Gaining the respect of family, friends, and coworkers

I'm sure there's more but that's what comes to mind for now!

Very cute...

I poked fun at the world when I drank, probably more... I suspect I was called grumpy on occasion (maybe still)...

Right on! You typed out a lot of stuff I was to lazy to produce...

I like this list. Might need to post it somewhere...

I did take care of my dog when I was a drunk. Just sayin...:lmao

It's good to remind myself because I do forget.

I did take care of my dog too, but I wouldn't call it "good care". The worst was when I went on a bender and came to with my dog licking my face and looking at me as if to say "you're sick, I'm bored, and I REALLY need to go outside".

Too funny... He still loved you...

They may have been the only one that never judged us and complained that we "smelt like booze"...

My personal list

- Stop or reduce the Gout attacks
- Lose weight to reduce the load on my bad back
- Save Money (6er = $10, $10 X 365daysayear = $3,650.00... at least)
- Eliminate the possibility of a DUI or worse
- Create more friendships that have a POSITIVE impact on my life
- Enjoy life more

All of these things have happened for me since I gave up beer 18 months ago!

ronjohn 01-13-2014 09:59 PM

Anybody that has ever had a gout attack would completely agree... Had that once and that was a total show stopper... Hope that never flares back up!!!!

I'll get locked up again, fall into depression, feel sooory for myself, hate myself etc List is endless

letustrythis123 01-13-2014 10:17 PM

I am only four days sober but just today I took care of so many things I'd been putting off forever.

courage2 01-13-2014 10:24 PM

If I don't drink, I can learn to have fun, remember poetry, and not stink.

my whole life when drinking becomes a messy, chaotic, disgusting cesspool of dishonesty, drunkenness and i want to kill myself.

I am a danger to myself, those I love and society at large.
