Health Problems from Drinking?

Just wondering what kind of problems people have got/had as a result of drinking? This is not a medical advice request of any sort, it's just something I've been concerned about recently.

Where do we begin?? . . . when your abdomen feels like it's not coping anymore, that was my cue to make a change!! . . . though there were gradual hints up until then that I ignored!!

strokes, neuropathy and other nerve damage, and increase in arthritis/gout are my main residuals.

The gastritis, liver pain, IBS and pancreatitis I used to have seemed have resolved themselves tho...
I fall over less too.

Besides physically feeling like hell, I was extremely depressed and anxious all the time. Most of that is gone now that I'm sober.

Yep -alcohol caused a lot of health problems for me ( both mental and physical ). Fortunately quitting solved pretty much all of them.

hows your recovery going James?

D
That sounds pretty horrific Dee

The recovery is going grindingly slowly, xmas/new year was a non-starter recovery-wise, but I spent most of it with my fiancé's family, so I was watching my behaviour *really* closely. I managed to not get wasted even though I drank. The best I can say is it passed without alcohol related incidents and I didn't drink til I was ill. I guess that's something. But it's just damage limitation, rather than anything more lasting and useful.

I've drink a lot less that I have for some time, but it's still too much.

I get by James - I'm really glad to be alive

I hadn't seen your other thread when I wrote this - didn't want you to think I was being a wiseguy...

the bottom line is - the longer we drink the more we risk long term health issues. The sooner we can quit the better.

I had some skin issues, digestion and the mental part being depressed, anxious and unballanced.

For me the change in recovery has been faster than the change I experienced when drinking.

It is slow and subtle deteriation so we accept the missery as the state of things,

You do a lot more than get by Dee, at least to for many people.

No worries Dee.

Yeah, my health is beginning to suffer a little. I'm having some stomach/gut problems (amongst others) - nothing serious as yet, but I want to nip it in the bud.

Alcoholic neuropathy was the biggy for me. But that was diagnosed after years of migraines that lasted for months, anxiety, stomach pain, panic attacks... The neuropathy eventually cleared up after 9 + months, more or less. I don't have the whole flappy foot thing anymore anyway.

Elevated blood sugar. Greater risk for diabetes as I had gestational diabetes while pregnant with my eldest child. Have to schedule another blood test and doctor's appointment to discuss.

James

Nip it in the bud now!!! Don't wait until health issues get worse because for sure they will!! I had bowel issues, horrendous heart-burn, vertigo and, by far the worst (and the thing that almost took my life), paranoia and depression. Hope you can get and stay sober

Liver pain
Paresthesias of extremities
Weakness
Unsteadiness
Fatigue
Poor quality sleep
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
Chronic dehydration
Blood sugar problems
Opportunistic infections
Rough, gray complexion
Terrible depression

I'm happy to say that all of this has cleared up in the last 4.5 months.

Hey D, wow that's unreal. You inspire me. Thats a miracle your still with us!

For a split second, my AV thought, ''See, you don't have all of these things! your good to drink for awhile still!". Wow. How sick is that?

How many attack have you had?Have you had any further pancreatitis attacks since you've quit drinking?
Do you take any supplements for it? any advice?

I've heard we can still have attacks - even if we've quit drinking.

Dunno if i'm being a Pony...but I have had allot of anxieties everyday because of this.

Sorry bout all the questions. I have don't know anybody in my life who has this disease.

I developed a severe case of pernicious anemia. For those who don't remember 5th grade biology, pernicious anemia is an autoimmune disease resulting from a lack of B12. Because it went untreated, I have permanent nerve damage in my hands and feet, which is very uncomfortable and requires that I give myself injections every 2 weeks.

I attribute it too my drinking because I refused to go to the doctor when symptoms appeared because I didn't want to admit to my doctor how much I was actually drinking.
