Last night, after more than a month of sobriety, my brother drank about half a bottle of whiskey. Does this mean we're faced with withdrawal symptoms all over again? He can't afford to miss any more work (he was out two weeks last time). Can one "slip" send us back to ground zero?

Hello, My name is Roy and I am an alcoholic of 24 years. I have put serious effort into quitting this year and have "slipped" also known as relapse twice pretty hard. It differs for each person but the last time I relapsed I drank for a little over a week and I went through the typical three day withdrawal and 6-7 day no-sleep thing all over again. He might have a couple of rough days but should be ok by Monday if he does not drink anymore this weekend.

Yes.
Although the physical withdrawal may be less intense this time, I'll venture a guess that he may stuggle spiritually for a few days. He probably still holds the belief that he can drink safely. And as long as he believes that, he will likely revisit gound zero again.

Hi Kerry,
Alcoholic also. Quit for 30 days and relapsed for 3. The withdrwawals after
the relapse were about the same,but not quite as long(physically)
The hardest part was emotionally. Like Roy said,everyone is different.
It depends on where he is at mentally. Also same as Roy,2-3 days physical
affects,and no sleep. But the second time at least I knew what to expect.(did not make it any easier however)

Hi, I am 28 and an alkie. Relapsed earlier this month...

Although I didn't experience any withdrawal symptoms per say, it DID start my negative thought patern of "being able to control it" etc... There is no two ways about it -- need to stay away from the first drink.

To that, mentally it had a negative impact on me as well and a bit of minor depression did set in....
