New Here

Hello,

My name is Kris and I am an alcoholic.

I have gone through periods of sobriety and find myself again in the web of this beast.

I will admit to wanting but not really wanting to quit.

I am 62 years old and the last time I got sober for 3 months and never slept one night of that. That was 3 years ago.

Can I do this on my own again?

Fearful of quitting and not.

Kris47

Kris you absolutely can do it! Welcome to an understanding and encouraging place.

I was older when I quit too - and I was terrified of letting go of it. That made no sense, since my drinking life was never fun anymore - it only brought me pain and dangerous situations. Keep talking to us - we all know how you feel, and we will help you get through this.

My parents are in their sixties and I wish so badly that they would quit. They have limited their lives so much being a slave to the bottle! Good for you for making the effort.

Thanks so much Resilient and Hevyn,

If I can quit on my own, what I am worried about is the withdrawal. Io had a pretty scary time of it last time for about a month. Is it dangerous on my own?

Kris

You can do this. I am in your age range and have had a battle with drugs/alcohol for quite some time. I have been sober the majority of the time but fall off every 6+ months or so. I am sober now and I've never felt better. I think it helped to get off all my psych meds. (that's just me). I use this forum. It has definitely helped. Glad you're here.

Thanks, Kissimee,

It's just that I have drank 10 drinks everyday of my life except for the short intervals in between, every 3-5 years or so. I want to quit but am really SCARED PHYSICALLY.

I would recommend speaking to your doctor about withdrawal/detox.

The more your detox the symptoms increase. I am not meaning to scare you, but you have to be safe with this. Can you see your doctor? Be honest about everything?

We all need support, it's difficult on your own, but you don't have to do it alone, there are plenty of options, but with the right support it can be done!!

Hello and welcome to SR! As has been mentioned above, it's definitely a good idea to see your doctor regarding your detox period.

I was a very heavy drinker for years and I quit a few months back with the help of this community. I had tried to stop before but I didn't have this support group so I never made it past a few weeks. Today, I am 64 days sober. You can do this!!

Yes there are many options of support and you have made agood start coming here where you can check them all out. Insomnia is horrid but it does pass after a while, we are all different in the timescales of withdrawal gettting better, but it does xxxx

Iluvdisney, purplenight, thanks for your responses. Zelda fan, did you do this on your own? Congrats on your 64 day sobriety!

It's just that I need to do this on my own for now. Can't readily explain it now. Can I do this safely if I try and how might I start?

You could start by getting medical help from your doctor to get you safely and comfortably thru withdrawal. Alcohol w/d can be dangerous, best to get your doctor's help.
