We don't unlearn alcoholic (and pre-alcoholic) attitudes and behaviors in twelve days.

I needed to change my entire perspective in order to achieve and then maintain my sobriety. Most of us (myself included) would only attempt such a thing kicking and screaming.

The AA Big Book Twelve Steps provide for a "complete psychic change," but time, effort, resourcefulness, honesty, perseverance, a commitment to not drink, no matter what, a leap of faith that there is a better way for me, and a whole bunch of other things need to be attended to in order to achieve this. All of that can be accomplished in therapy as well, the ultimate goal being acceptance in both cases.

If sobriety were easy and required nothing more than clear thinking, self-knowledge and hard work, everyone would be doing it.
