Hello Everyone, I stumbled across this site last night, kept me up all night...It was very inspiring, and has give me some hope and insight and encourages me to know I am not on my own:-)

I have come to realize I have a problem, what started "a wind down glass of wine" in the evening, after a good few years has turned into I can't go 2 days without a drink...I made a right holy show of myself on my works xmas footing...was carted off to hospital and put on a drip with vitamins?...then I did the same thing on xmas day with my Aunty, wasn't carted off to hospital, but was close...I only went out for half an hour...came back 4 hours later after being sobered up. I know I need to make changes. I spoke to the doc on Fri, told him, he has referred me to a local alcohol dependancy centre, I am going to ring them tomorrow...I didn't even know until this weekend you get withdrawals, It sounds very scary! I know now why i can't get past day 3, will see what they say tomorrow.

I am sure your site will be most usefull to me, and I will be able to start a new year in a much more positive way.

Welcome to SR! No you are not alone, there is awesome support here.

Don't feel embarrassed about going back to work. Walk proud with your head up. You are courageous to admit you have an issue. Hope they recommend a good detox method that will make things safe and comfortable for you.

Glad you are here.

The worst thing about the xmas day shenanigan was I look after my disabled dad who suffered a stroke 3 years ago, I look after him, he was waiting up for me to come back..all my judgement went totally out of the window, I am usually quite sensible in my role looking after him, he was in a right state when I got back! It was very surreal getting him in bed trying my best to be sober.... he knew I had been drinking, and I told him a pack of lies about where I had been!...He was funny in the morning though...he said to me " did you sleep well, or was you up all night thinking of an excuse for last night?" bless him! x he ain't daft!

I would regularly make a show of myself at work do's, they soon forget and start talking about somebody else. Don't worry too much, just try and get well. xxx

Dry gagging

I have been dry gagging now for a good few months, It is getting worse usually in the mornings, when it is really bad I do bring up a lot of Bile, is this because of alcoholism? While reading other posts on here I have seen it happens to other people. Is this normal? and nightsweats?

I would consult a doctor to be sure but I had that problem in last few months at the end of my career. I could barely eat after my binges.

Welcome busymiss! SR was a beacon of hope for me when I was really suffering - I'm glad you found us.

I don't recall having the gagging - but the nightsweats are typical of withdrawal. I was very shaky and anxious too. Thankfully it all passes, and we never have to go back there again.

I'm glad you're taking a look at what drinking is doing to you. I had to stop all together because I never knew what would happen once that first drink was in my system. It became dangerous and unpredictable. I agree with Kate about work - it will fade from their memory.

You're withdrawing between binges. Or between "drinking sessions." Not a good sign. See your doc.

I had this too busymiss when I was at the end of my drinking career. I really don't know what was causing it because on the weekends when I wasn't going to work it didn't happen. I still drank the same tho on Fri and Sat nights, more actually. I did sleep later the next day and didn't have to go to work and stress through a day of feeling like ass on weekends, so maybe it was stress of the morning.

It was high on my list why I was giving up drinking. I haven't had this happen since I stopped drinking tho, so it was (too me) the drinking that was causing it.

positive day

I have had a very positive day today...I was squeezed in to be assessed at the local Dependency unit. Had a right good chat to one of the councilors,I am at the level of hazardous drinking, but I am still in control, they have set up a detox prog for me, I don't have to do rehab, have to do a 2 week daily diary thing, I have to stay off wine, (which I have done for the last week anyway)..have to set a limit of no more than 3 cans of beer a night, with a view to cutting down over the next few weeks and then stopping completely. Am confident, we talked about my diet and how alcohol suppresses the appetite, and withdrawal. Have been advised to have a liver function test and vitamin supplements.
