netflix recommendations
Any recommendations for recovery-related movies/shows? I'm watching Addicted now, but the images of drug use give me the heebie jeebies. I don't mind images of drinking or smoking, but I can't handle the needles. We have Netflix and the new Redbox subscription (only I don't know how to work it without my husband here). I looked for 28 days, but it wasn't on there.
There are two I would suggest. Both have a sort of a similar theme. YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU is an oldie that won best picture for 1938. The play won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, but it’s as much a comedy as anything.
The other is “I AM”. It’s a documentary (of sorts) about Tom Shadyac, the director of a host of comedy films including Ace Ventura. It’s really about his search to find something more meaningful than all the money and fame he acquired.
IMO both have a good message for the alcoholic/addict.

Lost in Woonsocket. Don't know if it is on Netflix. It is a documentary and I really liked it. I saw it when I was in in patient. Also Things we Lost in the Fire although it does have needle use. Halle berry, David duchovney and Benicio Del Toro. I don't remember it being at the theaters but it was good but if squeamish about needles, no.
'Smashed'

Not recovery related, but health related... just watched Food Matters, and think it's got some pretty valuable information. Bill Wilson actually gets a mention in there, so maybe it is somewhat related. Won't tell you the reference though, so you'll have to watch it . Has to do with how he dealt with depression.

I thought Smashed seemed more real and less Hollywood than most of the others. I especially liked the portrayal of normies who don't understand alcoholism and condemn them as if they have a character defect.
Factotum. When I first saw it years back, it made me want to quit on the spot--despite being a young guy active in drinking adventures. I tried watching it again, but knowing the plot diluted the prior effect. I still recommend it if you haven't seen it.
