Newbie - first day sober

Hi all, new here. Been reading through the forum for a day now and this place seems really nice. I am 28 and not drinking as bad as I did a couple years ago. I went through a really rough patch in my life for a couple years and was blacking out regularly. I woke up in the hospital once after I basically tried to drink myself to death in 2007.

Things are much better in my life, and I don't drink daily anymore. However I have been stressed at work lately and recently moved in with my girlfriend (who I will be proposing to in December)... All this stress has me drinking more again (not out of control, but to much)...

I want to improve my temper/mood, my health, and my relationships and I don't want to be a prisoner to the booze any longer.

I do not like the AA powerless approach. I have heard of secular groups but would like to find a a group that meets in Boston with a more personal responsibility and meditation approach.

Thanks for reading, and sorry for rambling.

Welcome to SR. Try looking in the secular connections section for other options besides
AA.

Welcome! I just joined SR yesterday. When I couldn't sleep at 2am I was even up reading it! Just knowing there's an immediate place to turn has been so good in the last 24 hours. Good luck on your journey to a fellow Bostonian (though now I'm in Oregon and only sober a day, so not much help on resources).

Finishing up my 4th day sober. Going pretty well. Had Thanksgiving and everyone else was drinking but i didn't feel bad. Was nice to be fully aware and myself.

Thanks for helping me get through this, SR. :You_Rock_

Good job surviving Thanksgiving, Bosox. That is an accomplishment. I pulled it off too, but man, it took some serious work. Good to have you here. Keep us posted.

Just saying hello and welcome.

Welcome, Bo, glad you're here.

Congrats on Thanksgiving. I managed to survive it too w/drinking all around me thanks to the messages on this board and some serious work on shutting down my AV. It's an impressive accomplishment & set the groundwork for Christmas & New Year's.
