Attending a funeral

I lost a good friend to cancer this week and have his funeral today. I'm not tempted to drink, but I was thinking how this would have been an excuse to drink for me at one point not long ago. I'm happy to not want that today, but still very sad. I guess it's better to just deal with my feelings rather than try to drink them away.

I'm so sorry for your loss WritingHelps

I had a similar funeral last year - I was glad to be sober - it felt like I was honouring my mate's all too short life.

Thanks everyone. It was a rough day. Some friends of his who I didn't know invited my fiancée and I out for drinks afterward. We were so drained mentally and physically that it was easy to decline, but it was really tempting. But we got home, safe and sober, looking forward to tomorrow looking a little brighter.

My first year of sobriety was filled with a lot of firsts sober, including my first funeral sober. It was my brother in law who died of liver failure. We used to party together quite a bit, so this one hit close to home. This was the only time during that first year that I really felt that a drink might make thinks better. Fortunately I had an understanding wife who didn't mind that I left immediately following the funeral and drove back home to catch a meeting and talk with my sponsor.

I'm not sure your situation WH, but I write this when I see threads on funerals. This one did a number on me, and if I had not had a backup plan and a sympathetic wife, I may have drank.

My condolences regarding your friend
Zube
