Find other things to occupy your time. To get that same feeling of contentment at the end of the night.

It isn't about quitting drinking. It is about finding things you would rather do. I am not being judgy, we are in the same boat. i am lost as hell and all I know is I need to want to replace the easy way of feeling good.

I am just trying to quit today myself, and I have no where near the reasons to do so that you do.

You both have the same reason to quit: to stay alive. I'm only 22 and can count a few occasions that I am flabbergasted I made it out alive from. Alcoholism is a progressive disease and if you don't die from the physical complications, you'll die from being hit by a car, etc.

People use a variety of resources to quit. I used Rational Recovery / AVRT.

Here is a link to some other methods or programs:

Also, if you'd like, check out our secular forum.

I'm 7 days into it. It's been a little rough because I was a heavy drinker but feeling stronger now. They say 7-10 days and you start feeling better. I think this was one (of the few) good decisions I made in life.

Good luck to both of you!

Hi Max. You need to stay sober for you, so you can respect yourself.

The rest will follow.

Hope you have a good rest tonight and feel ready to tackle this tomorrow. You aren't alone.

In many communities, there is an Alcoholics Anonymous group that has regular meetings. My wife and I quit drinking a year ago, and believe that regular attendance at AA meetings is a great help to staying sober!

Write yourself a note (notepad in Windows works well for this) about exactly why you want to be sober. And maybe be a little hard on yourself in the note. Read it tomorrow morning, and take it to heart. If drinking you wants to quit, sober you will be so happy you finally got rid of drinking you.

At least that's what I did and what I'm hoping for. I am going into day 4 tomorrow.

I attend AA meetings. From the get go I volunteered to be of service at my meetings. It's a great way to "keep coming back" AND I found it a bit easier to get to know people. Being active in my sobriety....meaning the above, and also doing the steps with a Sponsor, taking direction, etcetc works for me. On my own.....who am I kidding??! I drank with a bunch of drunks/addicts and I'm staying sober with recovering drunks/addicts. We understand each other, and have some really fun times in and out of meetings too. Bobbi

Max,
I entered a hospital De-tox when I decided to quit drinking. My doctor at Kaiser strongly advised me to do so. To be blunt here...as others have stressed...this is serious. Just a suggestion to consult with a physician.

I would suggest seeing a doctor. I am day well, 8 now that midnight has come and gone. I went to see my doctor, who is well aware that I am an alcoholic, to get something to deal with withdrawal.

Welcome to SR Max

Meetings sound good...seeing a Dr does too...especially if you have a family....detox can sometimes be rough. Best to be safe
