Question about Number of sober days...

If you are new to recovery or if not, think back to your first 90, 120 or 180 days. Did you know every morning when you woke up, what sober day it was for you? If you did when did you stop counting?

The reason I ask this is because a relative who stopped drinking "about 3 of 4 weeks ago" and is attending meetings daily, doesn't know how many days sober he. When he told me about his recovery and I asked how many days he was sober, he said "I don't know its been a few weeks". I thought that was standard practice but I have no idea, maybe its not.

Did you count your days sober?

I did until I got to a few weeks. Maybe after the first month I counted more in weeks then months.

some people don't count at all as they feel it's counting towards something. I felt it counting away from something. Everyone's different, I wouldn't read anything into what your relative said -being sober is the main thing

I counted days for the first few months, then counted in months. Now I count in years. I count each sober minute as a victory.

I know my date and I can still figure out the number of days, if I put some mathematics to work....

It took me a long time to get to today. Almost 2.5 years of continuous sobriety for me.

Yes, I only have today and today is an awesome day to be sober!

Thank you for your responses, I appreciate it. I am always reading on here- it's Day 10, It's day 28, etc. I thought that meant everyone counted. Appreciate your help.

I was so disoriented the first week sober I couldn't count! But I went back a couple of weeks later and loaded an app that counts the days for me. Somehow gives me a boost to check it now and then!

Well, isn't this something, while posting this the relative in question called me and said he relapsed and that he felt lousy lying to me about how long he had been sober. He called to tell me that he is at Day 2! I emailed him SR's website and told him to look into it. I hope he joins.

It seems like you probably had a gut instinct that something didn't seem right, rather than something about how you count days. I agree, if not even here at SR hopefully he is able to find help somewhere that works for him

For some people counting days can be pretty demotivating if they are stumbling along getting themselves together, we can be our own harshest critics. sometimes it's better to colour in the calendar red and green .. I think eventually though the plan is complete abstinence and then i suppose days , months and years will be noted , even by the non county types

Every green is glorious , m

I no longer count days.... Though I did up until/around my 2 week mark...

I know my sobriety date is August 20th, 2013. And, I know that is on a Tuesday. Thus, I know each Tuesday marks a new week (though I don't count the actual # of weeks -- I did up until the 8th week...) and I know the 20th of each month marks a new month. Those I am absolutely keeping track of!

I am almost up to 3 months!!! And THAT makes me glad.

I plan to count 'till I pass my milestones. 14-days and 30-days have historically been when I falter. It's important to me to lead to and pass those marks this time.

I have a day counter app on my phone that I use to keep track. After a few months, I didn't check it as much, but the first 90 days or so I looked at it every day.

First 100 days I pretty much knew how many days I had been sober. After that I started counting in months.... which I still do. I treat myself to something special every time I get another month sober.
