Back from Vegas

I'm back from my business trip to Vegas. Wow was that ever a test for me! Most of the time in the exhibit hall was cocktail hour and my coworker kept bringing wine to the booth for me. I politely turned it down each time but the smell of wine, beer and mixed drinks was around me the entire time! Being Vegas everyone in the hotel was walking around with a drink in hand as well.

I managed to stay strong and resist the urge and made it home without having a drop. I did learn from the experience how important having a plan is to sobriety. I knew going in it was going to be a challenge and I know that's how I made it through. I never let my guard down. Now I just need to apply that to my everyday as well. Tomorrow will be the next test since it's Friday.

Thanks as always for all the support. I was on mobile SR numerous times while there to keep me going :)

Impressive. Not sure I could handle Vegas right now.

Glad to hear trip went well. Making up your mind and sticking to it ,doable every time, has to be right?
Way to go

I just returned from a two-day stay in Vegas and I must say I think it's the last refuge for active alcoholics and especially smokers! I saw myself in half of the people I walked by, beer in one hand, cig in the other, stumbling around in a haze.

Can't say I miss that, but it was good to see what active alcoholism looks like. Don't get me wrong: I saw tons of normal people enjoying themselves with an occasional drink, but I could pick out the former me in many.

I'm sorry I didn't hit a meeting; I'm told there is a vibrant recovery community there, especially near the strip. I was just focusing on making sure my mate visited her friends and got to experience the city. She had half a beer when we went out to dinner with friends (amateur).

I've never been to Vegas but just knowing what I do of the atmosphere and if people were constantly pushing drinks at me I don't think I'd survive at this point in my life. Good job on staying strong!

Wow! That is really incredible! Congratulations!

ZeldaFan 11-07-2013 06:20 PM

Memphis, I know exactly what you mean! I felt like I could pick out the people with a problem from the normal folks just enjoying themselves. It made me sad and committed at the same time.

Congrats!

You're an inspiration. If you can survive Vegas, I can get through tonight.

ReadyAndAble 11-07-2013 09:33 PM

Great job, Zelda! Way to be true to yourself. You should be super proud of yourself right now. (Which maybe makes you the first person ever to leave Vegas feeling that way, lol... :) )

I think any decisions that help you stay sober are impressive... including the decision to stay put. I was a hermit for many months. Now I go anywhere, and don't give booze a second thought.... but it took time, and I don't regret a minute of the time I spent playing it safe. If you're not drinking, you're kicking butt! :)

The last time I was in Vegas, I could have given nic cage a run for his money in his role in 'leaving las Vegas.'

I have to go there on business in the near future. Talk about a test. Amazing any alcoholic can make it through that place in one piece.

Tang, be sure to post here when your trip comes up! I was posting in the 24 hour thread to keep myself on track and reading a lot while I was there.
