Canadian Thanksgiving
For all those Nucks out there, Happy Thanksgiving.
It's a challenging time of year for me. I know I'll have drinks offered my way, and some will want to know why I don't drink. That's never fun, but on the other hand how many times to we great to enjoy great food and company? I'm in charge of creamed spinach this year

Nomis I was just thinking I have now navigated a full years worth of holidays. I guess not for you. You must have stopped just after your thanksgiving? Well happy thanksgiving. I will have to google the history of the Canadian version. I had not idea there even was one.

Happy Thanksgiving my national brothers and sisters. Friday night I got curious regarding the origins of Canadian Thanksgiving. Ah Wikipedia...what did we do without it? Turns out that for over 3 Centuries it was often celebrated both as a time of harvest as well as a celebration in overcoming hardship or near death situations. There was no set date until 1957 (determined as 2 monday in October now) I believe. It was celebrated anytime in October or November up until then as some of its roots were from the Jewish Sukkot celebration which also differs in date.
As recovering drunkards, we I think we know something bout suffering hardships and near death situations..I think it's a beautiful time to celebrate where we have come from and where we are going in overcoming are past difficulties. As there is some talk about the National Order of Good Cheer in Nova Scotia having some impact on our celebrations (a desperate attempt to find some nobility amongst the working pioneers and explorers) I offer us this Gaelic blessing to us all:
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Happy Thanksgiving!
I'm actually American but I love Canada, I love living here, and I just love everything about it. I belong to a curling club, I've attended several NHL games, I frequent Tim Horton's regularly, and I swear to God I even let an "eh" slip out once in a while.
However, it is still hard for me to accept Thanksgiving coming before Halloween lol. And how do you know when to start Christmas? (the day after thanksgiving in the States). And what actual day to you have your Thanksgiving feast? People up here seem to have it on any day of the holiday weekend--Saturday, Sunday, or Monday. lol ok I'm kidding and it's a day of gratitude even if it is in the wrong month!
I celebrated yesterday with a family who doesn't drink, so that was pretty easy. Just so strange to be with a large number of people in a functional family that has never had addiction issues. They were all so happy and normal!

Thanksgiving will have so much more meaning for me if I remember it.

It sounds like you have jumped right into Canadian life. Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian friends!
I'm cooking the turkey dinner tomorrow for my kids and grandchildren. I do sometimes forget to be grateful for what I have, but Thanksgiving is definitely a time when I remember how close I came to losing it all.

I'm alone this weekend. Sad, it's been hard, but I'm grateful that I'm continuing to push through, 3 and a half months, working hard on being mindful, staying present. I'm worth the effort!
