First Time being sick

I haven't had a really bad cold since I got sober in April. I am very weary about what medicine I should take. I am more open to home remedies, herbs, and vitamins. Any suggestions? It's a stuffed nose, runny nose, and sore throat. Thanks!!

I rinse my nose with salty water, just sniffing a few drops off the tips of my fingers. Also, a hot, steamy shower can help for a bit. Finally, I like to eat either egg rolls with hot spicy Chinese mustard or sushi with lots of wasabi.

Your local health food store.

I hope you feel better soon. Colds are not my friend.

that is smart thinking for the sober one

seems in most cases best to just ride it out with plenty of rest

Thanks for all the tips! I went with vitaman C, vitamin B12, and echinacea. A sober friend gave me those ideas. Still feeling yucky but it's bound to get over quick. I used to be sick all the time while drinking and I would be in a fog on dayquil and nightquil. It's weird to be able to function while having a cold.

I'm sorry...It's going around where I live too. There is a product called Cold-Ease that is actually natural, and its said to cut cold time in half. I think the main ingredient is zinc.

I recommend moducare to prevent future colds. It regulates your immune system. It is all natural plant sterols. The last time my family got sick with the flu, I, being the only one who takes moducare was the only one who did not get it!

I have a fairly nasty flu right now, always seems to hit after I've been sober for a week or two. I find the cough drops known as "Fisherman's Friend" very helpful, probably on my third pack this week. They are very strong, but very soothing. Also, lots of herbal tea and honey. Honey is a must.

I recently kicked a cold fast by doing lots of vitamin C, hydration with lots of water and decaf tea, and hydrogen peroxide in the ears. You can google th etechnique for fending off colds. You really need ot catch it early. Not sure if it helped, but it did pass faster than normal for me! I do take mucinex for congestion. It thins things so the chest and sinuses drain, clear. It does not give me any high or drowsy feeling, but you might want to check into it if you are concerned. Pharmacists can tell you about the properties of meds in terms of dizziness, abuse potential, etc...

I hope you feel better.

Probiotics also help build your immune system.

Thank you all! Colds suck and it is that season! I used to drown my colds with alcohol, anyone else do that?

Hi Patty, I also have my first cold in sobriety (almost 8 months) right now and it sucks. I can't believe I used to drink when I felt this way but I did. Wine, wine and more wine. Oh, and an excuse for a Hot Toddy? I also threw Nyquil down and anything else I could get my hands on that I would think would "cure me." Awful.

This time I am also doing massive doses of Vitamin C and plenty of rest. It's going around here on the East Coast too. Yucky, but as you said, it is weird to be able to still function while having a cold.

Feel better soon! All good, healthy wishes coming your way!
