A new start
Hi, I've a good few hours reading through a few topics on here and thought I'd take the plunge and join.
I've been drinking every night for about 12 years, and have just made the decision to stop. I started getting heart palpitations and balance loss etc, so I knew my body was giving me some warning signs. I also hate the way it controls my life. I tried to quit around this time last year and made it for a grand total of 6 days before slipping back into the old routine. I've managed to stay sober on 6 of the past 8 days and am determined to keep it going.
Having read a few topics on here I can say that I'm on the lower scale of alcoholism - thankfully I'm not too physically addicted, but there's no doubt in my mind that's what would happen eventually. The mental addiction is another thing - every day on the way home from work it's a huge battle to avoid buying anything, and I'm sleeping really badly as well. What on earth do people do every night instead of drinking? Life seems so boring and dull, but I know it's the right thing to do.
Hopefully it will get easier - I'm pretty scared about what will happen if I lapse back into nightly drinking!

Welcome Andy, i found new hobbies and activities to fill my time when i got sober. My life was pretty dull and miserable when i was drinking to be honest. I have a lot more fun now. It does get easier. Sleeping should improve with sober time. Lots of support here. Glad you have joined us.
to SR! Now that I'm sober I do anything I want to do, and do it better. Develop some new hobbies, something to occupy your time and your hands. I used to walk my dogs when I was bored or craving a drink. They got a lot of walks and I stayed sober.

Thanks for the welcome :-) Another sober day and night for me - hope I can keep it going tomorrow and over the weekend! I'm trying to think of something I can do to occupy my time. When I was drinking I always seemed to be happy just watching TV...
