This condition is often referred to as "reverse tolerance," and is a cardinal symptom of severe dependence on alcohol. After drinking heavily, usually for a number of years, our liver can no longer process alcohol as it normally does, and much more of it gets to places in our system much more quickly than it would otherwise.

Raider, I wish you all the best with this positive step.

There is a wonderful life waiting for you sober. So many things to achieve.

It's tough, but it's worth pushing through, every single day.

I've been pissed off, mad, scared, lost faith I could do it....but I've never, ever regretted one single day of being sober. I've never looked back and thought, "man, I wished I'd written myself off til I passed out yesterday".

I've learned that all I am saying no to is one drink, that's all. It's the first one that gets us into trouble....all the others after that are irrelevant.

Best of luck Raider!

As others have stated, this is a sign of liver issues. The liver can no longer metabolize the alcohol so it just kind of floats around in your blood stream. Please get your liver panels checked when you go to rehab!

And best of luck in inpatient! It really saved my life. I went right from the ICU for severe withdrawals (was in a coma, on life support, etc.) to rehab and the experience really taught me exactly what I needed to do to stay sober. Just try to soak in as much info as possible. Be open minded, honest and willing.

is it normal?? welp, that depends on the definition of normal. IMO, it isn't normal for people that don't have a problem with alcohol. normal people don't drink so much and so long that their tolerance drops.
it is normal, though, for alcoholics. when I stopped drinkin, I was getting blackout drunk on a 6 pack. amazing thing is that when I started a cancer fight 13 months later, I had to go through quite afew tests on how my internal organs were functioning. all tests results came back great. its amazing my body recovered from all the crap I put it through.
now get yer but to rehab!!!

Ah so that explains so many blackout stories - reverse tolerance. I thought maybe I just wasn't drinking enough.

Yeah, it was my experience too that I could tolerate very little alcohol in the end. I think it was probably because I was drinking every night and gave my body little chance to recover between sessions.

Good luck in rehab. Come back and tell us how you got on. I will be thinking of you x

Hello Raider!

How's things in Shelton?

The sun is shining up here now, but that's supposed to change soon.

I hope you have a good day!

What I noticed with my experience was that relapses took less and less time to get me into serious difficulty physically. In a sense my body had become less "tolerant" of alcohol in that I would become seriously ill much sooner than before. On the other hand, I still could have several drinks and not "show" it. That is I could drink at a party and not appear as if I had been drinking excessively. This of course was my impression and might not have been how others observed me.
What ever way one describes it, the illness is progressive, both because of the effect that alcohol has on the body over time but also because of simple aging, that is how various bodily organs, like the liver, are less able to do their job as time passes. This latter aspect is made more severe with continuing alcohol abuse.
Your entry to a rehab is a wise one. It is a good start. I hope there is also some kind of aftercare. Otherwise it may become what used to be (or still is) called merely a "spin dry", completely ineffective, a pit stop in the race to addiction. ("Dry them out, give them some pills and send them home!")
