When I stopped drinking I took up cycling. I needed something to keep my mind active so I could stop obsessing about alcohol. I was only a few months in and I signed up for a tough organized ride. I was about 20 miles in and the hills were just awful. Just long grinds up steep hills. I was climbing one terrible hill and was following a woman. She was crying very loudly. This hill had beaten her. She was in pure agony and I almost asked her if she was ok but I figured that was a stupid question. She never stopped and made it to the top and kept going. This scenario has played out in my head many times. Every time I feel like I can't keep going and sobriety is too hard I think of that woman. She was beaten physically and emotionally but never gave up. I don't know who she was but she made an impact. When life gets too tough we have to stay mentally strong. We have to know we can do it before we can ever physically do it.
