Hi,
Did you use chocolate all the time for cravings? I'm starting day one again for the 5th time, fingers crossed. So many people I see say they use some kind of food to cope with cravings. Everything I've researched on my own says not to substitute a drink with something sweet , as it's the sugar in alcohol you crave and you'll ultimately fail.

Personally I ate a lot of candy and soft drink and didn't relapse, but everyone's different.

I don't think we have to ultimately fail, no matter what dearest Sally.

I mostly let go of sugar after I stopped drinking, and now just have a little.
But we all need to do this in the way that works best for ourselves....for me it was about eating healthy food, drinking lots of water and starting to exercise. Just walking actually, but it has always helped me.

I still go for a walk when a craving hits me. It helps me to feel physically better and changes my perspective.

Hoping today is a better day for you.

It's probably not the best strategy to take when what you're doing is destroying you.

Playing the tape through to the end - pushing past the rosy glow of 'wouldn't a few drinks be great' and remembering what really happened all those times I thought a 'few drinks' might be good - really has saved me more than a few times...and having my old posts here (along with everyone elses) to read has helped too.

I think this idea will really help me!!

[QUOTE=Dee74;4155183]CarolD was one of my dearest friends here and a woman I respected.

When she passed she had over 20 years of recovery, and she leaves a great legacy here, not only in the many forums she modded, but in Newcomers forums too...

Here's a cobbled together post of some of her tips to deal with cravings

Please feel free to add your own tips and suggestions for dealing with cravings from your own experience

Hi thanks x to add my reflection i do not have craivings this type. I like being sober my every lapsed was caused by severe stress and helplessness how to fix situation i have little control over. I guess best to fix situation is not to self medicate stress and i m done with this , therefore posted when i m sober to avoid being trapped in self pity and emotional distress. What works for me now is posting here and living in 24 hour day. Trying to kill the fear . Fear is my enemy simple practical things i was dependend on husband and those are overwhelming as i have no practice or skills. 15 years each had own role i performed mine well he performed his well. I was academic and creative he was practical and provider. So before becoming and learning how to be independent i have to let myself to be dependent and i think this forum is my tool. Maybe not practical but kinda yes as some advice relates to how to survive . X D

I think that kind of stuff is covered by urge surfing, allishope.

I found urge surfing was useful for those moments when I had has extreme anxiety, stress of fear of not being able to cope - if you can visualise yourself observing those feelings rather than being a part of them, you cancan take down the panic a few notches and actually think about solutions?

You may think the situations hopeless but upon reflection no situation is truly hopeless.

It may take a little practice but it works for me

Dang sorry the AV hit you like that CK but glad you didn't act on it.
Goes to show it is a vicious, calculating monster.

Had a bit of AV yesterday myself. Sitting on the porch by the pool, sun shining, kids playing, couple folks having a beer, been working my tail off in the shop all week and the ole AV said, "Fish! Wouldn't it be nice to sit here and drink 20 beers? We could unwind and act the fool just like old times. Ah, warm weather and cold beverages!!"

Well fool I have a cold beverage, sparkling flavored water and it actually tastes great AND quenches my thirst.
I am unwinding, don't you see me sitting down?
I haven't listened to you 1n over 3 years and ya know what? I wouldn't trade it for the world. Now get lost loser.
Went to bed sober. Got up feeling great.
The monster lost another battle.

Thanks for posting CK. Reminds us all to be vigilant.

I was taught about 'grounding' at the behavioral clinic. It helps me get more centered when I'm feeling anxious. I believe grounding can help with urges also.

Here's a pdf about grounding
