I'm sure you have heard of the old adage "If you are trying to control something, it's already out of control."

=Celticgirl;4114736]Thanks so much for all your honest responses. I don't really think anything is missing in my life; I'm just your typical middle-aged married lady working full-time, raising kids, dealing with typical stresses. I realize that drinking to excess will definitely cause more stress than I care to handle.

I guess the issue with me is that when I am with my friends, or my husband, I'd love to have dinner and a couple of drinks socially and not go completely overboard. I'm just now starting to take a hard look at myself and see what needs to change in my life.
I'd love to have a couple of drinks with dinner as well but I've had to face the fact that I can't. It's just not possible for me stop at a couple of drinks, once I faced the fact that I can't do this it became much easier to abstain.

Not being able to control our drinking is what makes an alcoholic an alcoholic. It's not a source of shame for me, it's simply a fact in my life. Giving up drinking entirely was not something I wanted to do either, it was something I recognized as having to do.

mostly only for short periods of time

once I thought that I had it going on
drinking only a few beers a week for a while
but
not sure when it happened
found myself in a major drunken state once again

and couldn't stop drinking
or
didn't want to stop drinking ??

I have found that with 5 years without a drink
this is what works best for me
in no way would I try some moderation drinking today

I have deceived myself enough in my life

I have always thought long-term moderation was a myth, even though it took me over thirty years of repeated attempts to convince my self.

If you still have any doubts check out the link from ClearLight on page two of this thread.

The fate of Moderation Management founder Audrey Kishline should be required watching and reading for any person that thinks moderation is a solution.

Thanks ClearLight for linking an insightful report.
