Hello from a newb

Hi all!

I just joined up and after 27 years have finally decided I had better quit!

I have a really good life going with a great lady and 11 year old boy and I really don't want to mess that up and want to be stronger than I have been until now.

it's only been a couple of days but I am a bit anxious about the possible withdrawal symptoms.

hope to speak with you all soon.

Thomas

Welcome to SR, Sithman If you are worried about withdrawal, please seek medical assistance. It can be dangerous and even deadly. Mine was very minor, but we are all different. At least let another person know you are detoxing so that someone is aware and can watch out for you.

Welcome Thomas, this is the first big step. As soberjennie says, if you may need medical help, then do go get it. And looks at what ways you are going to achieve your sobriety. There is plenty of help advice and support here, so check out as many threads as you want, feel at home! 😄

thank you all for welcoming me : )

I don't feel anything but positive (although I did feel suddenly nauseous last night for no reason, and maybe a little more sweaty) Does everyone experience some kind of withdrawal symptoms? or could I be lucky?....or is it coming? lol

oh and I forgot to mention that after over 20 years I made the decision because my girlfriend was in the hospital having surgery and while she was in I drank a little more than usual. This already shamed me BUT the day she got out I drank so much I actually fell over in the driveway taking the dog out. even though she does not yet know about this, this is humiliating AND intolerable! made even more so because she developed a fever and thought she might need to go back to the hospital.....and I was not there for her as I should be! I swore that will never happen again!

Also, as far as telling someone that I am detoxing, I can tell her, but am wondering when should I? If I telll her now only days after quitting she will surely just think " yeah, I've heard THAT before" should I tell her in a week? or tell her now?

sorry for the barrage of questions but I have a ton of them

Thomas I used to try and not drink a couple of days a week, this convinced me for years that I wasn't alcoholic, and also prevented me from getting withdrawals too bad, nausea, sweats and anxiety are common mild symptoms

As for when to tell, mmm, that really does depend on the nature of your relationship, your determination to commit both to sobriety and the relationship, and whether you feel it will be of benefit to both of you just now to open up. I kept my alcoholism secret for a long time, and only told my husband when I realised that I would never become sober as long as my addiction remained secret. My problem was I was a secret drinker who's hubby worked away mon thru Friday, so I would always have plenty of oportunity , so I had to be open and honest. It worked for me in spades, but it is a very individual thing.

Welcome Thomas! You have a positive attitude. It helps so much when we don't feel like we'll be losing anything. I was so dependent on it in the end I didn't know how to dig my way back to reality. This won't happen to you - you've made your decision to kick it out of your life. Congratulations on your determination. You can do it.
