Getting that AV to shut up

Now that I have decided to work on sobriety, my AV has gotten louder and more insistent. Today was a long day of hard manual labor, and I was fine until quitting time. Almost immediately, my AV started in:
"Pour a drink, you worked hard and you deserve it!"
"It's Saturday night, come on, a couple won't kill you!"
"Don't be a sissy. Lots of people drink more than you, for Pete's sake!"

How I would love to meet my AV in a dark alley while carrying a two-by-four.

When urges appear, I try hard to remember that I'm the one in control and that my AV is powerless on its own. It can't pour a drink or grab a six-pick, I'm the only one that can do that. I think to myself, "my AV wants a drink, but I don't want a drink. And I'm in control, my AV is powerless, so I won't drink".

With time that troll will get smaller and smaller and that voice will become very faint. Stay sober and that voice will lose the battle for your soul.

I just imagine making a fool of myself and calling up people at all hours of the night. My AV never mentions the horrible things alcohol did to my mind, body, and spirit. I tell mine that I am not wasting any more of my life. I drove by a cemetery today and realized this life thing is pretty cool, even if it's difficult, and that I only get o be on this earth once. And I am lucky to live in an industrialized country with food, running water, and lots of opportunities. Alcohol is a way to reject life. So I tell my AV to **** off.

I drank for over 30 yrs. I met my alcoholism face to face often in those years and it severely kicked my arse ... repeatedly.

It was my alcoholism that in the end held the 2X4. Yours may be different .... time will tell.

It wasn't until I admitted defeat that I was able to recover in Alcoholics Anonymous.

All the best.
