What's the biggest myth about drinking alcohol?
That it's cool.
I remember as a kid thinking I was cool for drinking and hanging out with all the 'hard' people. This perception lasted well into my 20's. The whole keeping up with the boys thing. A friend of mine's daughter has been posting loads of drunk photo's on facebook and it has been a bit of a hard slap in the face really. There is something obviously pathetic about wanting to get wasted to have a good time. When I think back to what I must have come across like between the ages of 12 and my early 20's, before I started drinking secretly, I'm pretty embarrassed about it. Not cool at all.

"I'll just have one more, and then go to bed..."
It's ludicrous to think that I would believe that night after night, and later stagger into the kitchen and panic at the realization that it was 2am and I had some important business meeting at 8am for which I was totally unprepared.

That it is an emotional depressant.. it's actually a nervous system depressant and those are two very different things (though emotional depression can certainly co-exist!)

Eddiebuckle's post just dropped a reality bomb in my mind!!
Also, how about "drinking is a civilised way to socialise with friends." Not for me it's not. I'd replace that myth with this truth: "drinking is a ridiculous way to start off a strange mental/physical reaction that always leads to uncontrolled consumption with progressively worse effects." At least it is for me.

It puts hair on your chest, makes you manly, something to do with the boys, etc. As I get older I realize the attributes I associate with manliness (independence, self-control, strength, earned respect, responsibility) are actually the opposite of someone who is drinking.
