Do not go cold turkey
 

I lost a friend yesterday from withdrawing cold turkey.
Please dont do it. Get to a doctor and do it safely and make it your last time you pick up a drink.

Your life is worth it. We all need you.

My condolences. I believe some people are able to withdraw cold turkey like I did but you're absolutely right, if there is any doubt at all that the symptoms are dangerous, get help. Thanks for the post.

I am so sorry for your loss. I did it cold turkey too (I did not have health insurance coverage) but I definitely would not recommend it.

Your post brings to light a subject that's not discussed enough IMO. I had absolutely no clue about withdrawing from heavy alcohol use, so much so that I had 3 (yes THREE) withdrawl seizures on separate occasions. The doctor said this was extremely dangerous and I could have died. I went to detox the last time, thank goodness, and it was much better on my system and it helped my recovery get off to a good start.

Withdrawal from alcohol is very serious and far too often deadly. Talk to a medical professional with experience in withdrawal. I tried it on my own because I was too stupid to realize the dangers and it almost killed me.

Withdrawal is one thing that you do not want to even think about doing on your own!!!

Whiskeyman, I'm so sorry for your loss. I wish your friend had not felt like they had to go it alone. Alcohol sucks!

They have all those PSAs about texting and driving. I think there should be PSAs about this too. People really don't realize how dangerous and possibly deadly it can be. So much shame and embarrassment attached to alcoholism that people literally die before they'll admit they need help to stop. Very sad.

My Brother had a seizure at work. He did not go "Cold Turkey", his body was used to a certain amount of alcohol in his system. I noticed when I came in to work that he was a little off, but was not aware of withdrawl symptons at that time.

It was a minor one, but still our work called 911 and he was taken by ambulance to hospital and I followed. He was dismissed later after doctors checked him.

Later that night, he had a full Grand Mal seizure and winded up in hospital for a week. I will never forget being in a hallway with him sedated (no private rooms available) and scared with his every single movement. He was later moved to a private room.

It took a while for his memory to come back.

So sad for you my friend and I hope this resonates with people who try to go "Cold Turkey" on their own.

Alcohol withdrawal is actually the only withdrawal that can kill a person. Did you all know that? It has something to do with what area of the brain alcohol effects. Im sorry for your loss Whiskey.............
