Question

Under the forum Stories of Recovery is the description - "From our members, sober or in recovery a year or more. Stories of Recovery from Addiction, Alcoholism and Codependency."

My question is what is the difference between being "sober" or being "in recovery."

I like to think of myself as just not drinking anymore. A large part of society places a stigma on those who say "I'm sober" or "I'm in recovery."

There are other forms of being "in recovery" besides just being sober. There are people who are codependent who are in recovery from that and they aren't fighting drinking. This also addresses drug addicts, who many times are considered "clean" as opposed to "sober". So this would apply to them also.

As long as that works for you, then what society or other individuals think is irrelevant. My personal goal is to not drink because of the affects it has on my body, both physically and psychologically, as well as how it affects those around me. As long as I am able to obtain that goal, I couldn't frankly care less what other people want to call me or my methods.

Do what is best for you and enjoy it - whatever you want to call "It"!

i say i am in recovery. recovered? only from the hopeless state of mind that made me drink.

i guess im not out in society much or dont pay attention because i dont hear all these labels or stigmas society uses.

or maybe its just that i dont care what society has to say.

Sadly we can't ask Carol, who wrote that, what she meant.

I think least nailled it tho - it's just being inclusive

however you find the situation in the real world, there's no stigma here
