Testing times Tonight i have a 21st to attend. I am really anxious about mixing with friends and family in a party situation (all big drinkers). I have volunteered to be designated driver so that should help. I am less worried about picking up a drink and more worried about the awkward socializing and also if i will be able to maintain a happy facade for the night. On the bright side it is a massive hurdle and if/when i get over it surely it will pave the way for easier times ahead. (positive thinking) I just don't want or need this pressure at this stage of recovery but there really is no way out other than facing this. Wish me luck, send me strength. Have a great day everyone :) |
You can do this, Pedro. Drinking is absolutely not an option. PERIOD |
If you're worried simply about socialising, the only way to learn how to socialise sober is to do it I think. You might be surprised and it may be no trouble at all. Have a contingency/escape plan tho - I know you're a designated driver but thats no need to stay there all night if you feel uncomfortable. Slip your passengers a few bucks for a cab if needs be. D |
Pedro, being the designated driver tonight was a smart choice. It's kind of like an insurance policy for the night. As for the awkwardness part I can't help you except to say find the food and pig out. The awkwardness part will get better with time as you become more comfortable in your own skin. |

Rock it Out! I saw you sign the 24 hr. thread.... Don't get sucked into the Vortex! Try to relax and have fun... :abcg: |
Hi Pedro, another fellow Aussie wishing you well. Dee's advice is good, sober you may not want to wait it out until the drinkers are done. :) The best thing will be waking up tomorrow morning with a full autumn Saturday ahead of you. Good luck and let us know how it goes. BTW I've found it best to have my glass in hand before anyone asks what I'd like to drink. |
