What are your triggers?

This came to mind because I was thinking about going to a basketball game tonight, but sporting events really really make me want beer (I was never a beer drinker primarily, but that's the kind of thing beer goes well with). It's hard enough being at home watching the game on TV without a beer!

Other notable triggers:
  • Being on a boat on a warm summer day = beer
  • Mexican food = margaritas
  • Italian food = wine
  • Concerts = vodka Red Bulls
  • Really hot days = raspberry vodka and tonic
I know I'm forgetting a lot. Sigh...

As I heard in a meeting the other night: "I still like drinking, I'm just not very good at it." It's okay to admit this, I think.

(I apologize in advance if this post is in violation of the policy. I didn't see anything specific about posts like this. Hopefully this doesn't get me in trouble, I like being here!)

There was just a post about this about a week ago. Look back on page 5 or 6 or 7.

College football Saturdays
Fishing on the gulf or fishing in general
Casinos. I've relapsed twice in a casino, once in Biloxi MS and once in Las Vegas. I have zero interest in gambling anymore.

I can definitely agree with the sporting events being a trigger. I just associate watching sports with drinking. Oddly enough, weddings are also a trigger for me.

I don't go anywhere like bars, pubs or parties. Also I no longer watch one TV station cause I watched it all the time when I was drinking. That is because my cable got cutoff and it was the only one I could watch. However, it really brings back bad memories so I don't watch that particular station. It sounds kind of silly, I know!

Yep, definitely casinos too. What else is there to do in a casino? Haha.

And with the TV station -- for me it is certain games. I used to play Subway Surfers on my tablet and felt I was "better" at it when I was drunk. So now I can't play it anymore. Just the associations we make with certain things, I guess.

My Triggers:

Seeing people I used to drink with.
Walking by my former drinking establishments.
Sometimes when I feel anxiety.

When I want to reward myself. For example, yesterday I finished my taxes and I had a strong desire to celebrate/drink. So I went out to socialize and I met a friend for coffee.

4:00 p.m., which is the start of happy hour at my former pub.

My main challenge is to learn new ways to deal with stress and anxiety rather than drinking.

Here's the older thread:

http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...-triggers.html

For me, as Non said in that earlier thread and Elisabeth is saying in this one: by the end, breathing was pretty much a good enough reason for me to have a drink or ten. But lots of other triggers too. Relationships of many sorts, eating, stress, anger, anxiety, happiness, elation, summer, winter, shopping, gardening, cooking...um, yeah... so basically: breathing

Being either too excited/happy or too sad/depressed is a trigger for me...
