New to SoberRecovery but like what I see

Hi All,
Thanks for being here. This is a great place to be in between meetings and times when you feel like talking or just reading.

I was just shy of 6 years sober and relapsed...work was stressful, and I was weak and let my guard down. I had not been to meetings in years and never really did the 12 steps. I was fortunate that i'd hit bottom and it was enough to scare me sober for almost 6 years...At the beginning I'd gone to meetings, and let my Big Book gather dust. Then this time....ahhh, just a quick drink to settle nerves.......boom.....down I went for about a month....All the memories came back....buying liquor hoping people don't see me, stashing in back of liquor cabinet, trying to fool myself that I can just take little drinks to keep an even buzz through the day. We all know how it ends....constant drunk, hangover, jitters, anxiety, no sleep, .... I remember it well from 6 years ago. I WILL Not let it happen again. I have a new birthday of 3-3-13. I've been to meetings about 3x/wk...trying to find a good group, and this time a sponsor. I want to do the steps the right way. I am amazed at the Big Book and its timelessness. I signed up for Grapevine and have several other books....this time, I know I need to do it right. I'm so happy for AA and now for SoberRecovery. Thanks for being there. Jim

I used to use part of the below quote as my signature, but edited it to something that does not mention AA. Sometimes Nature will let you read the whole article without subscribing...

"...Neuroscientists have begun to recognize that some of the most important brain systems impaired in addiction are those in the prefrontal cortex that regulate social cognition, self-monitoring, moral behaviour and other processes that the AA-type approach seems to target. 'A lot of the treatment programmes out there are targeting these systems without necessarily knowing that they are doing it,' says Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse in Bethesda, Maryland..."

Hope to hear more from you!

Hello Jim:

Glad to hear you are going to get serious about AA this time. Sometimes we need to have the crap kicked out of us before we see the light.

All the best.

It's good to meet you, Jim! SR got me back on my feet and kept me there.

I once had 3 yrs. sober and decided I could have a few once in awhile. 7 yrs. later I came crawling in here, totally broken. I finally get it that I can't touch a drop. Happy you have made this big decision and are on your way to a better life.

Hey Jim - welcome.

I had five years sober and relapsed about 2 years ago. Just pulling out of it now.

Good to meet you.

Welome

I had over 10 years clean and sober, through the Grace of God, the fellowships of AA and CA, and got complacent. Was prescribed pain pills about 3 years ago, and "off to the races." I now have 7 days clean and sober, and am grateful.
Glad to read your post!
