Hi 1of7

There will always be reasons or factors that can influence a decision to drink - if it's not our partners, it's our friends or family, or an ad on TV, or the desire to relax...

We just have to be better than that.

Get some sober support - this is your journey - you know what's best for you, right?

Welcome to SR.

It is not how much or how often we drink, it is how it affects us. If you think overmuch about drinking, about the next time, how much, how and whether or not you have a drinking problem, there is a good chance that you have one. See if you can refrain for drinking for a few months without obsessing about it.
If you are counting days till the end of your sober experiment and go get a bottle as soon as it is over to celebrate, you probably have a drinking problem..
That's the bad news, the good news is that you are here and if indeed you have a drinking problem, you can catch it in time before it wrecks your life and/or your health

Here is what Alcoholics Anonymous says about deciding whether we have a problem or not.

Alcoholics Anonymous : Is A.A. For You?

How did you score ??

All the best.

Well after 8 days of staying sober I fell off the wagon. Drank on Friday night. I guess I've got a problem because I made a commitment myself to stop drinking for 30 days and I didn't follow through. Where do I go from here? I have thought about going to some meetings. I keep telling myself I'm just a poser and meeting are for people with real alcohol problems. I've read many of the recovery stories and I don't seem to qualify as far of severity of drinking. Comments?

Well ... committing to be dry for 30 days and only making 8 raises a big red flag for me. How bad do you want to get ??

I know lots of AAs who had "postponed" going to meetings because they weren't as bad as some of the others. The oldtimers said to just put the word "YET" after their excuses.

I haven't lost my job (yet)
I haven't lost my wife and family (yet)
I haven't killed anyone (yet)
I haven't killed myself (yet)

Why not attend the AA meetings regularly for 30 days. listen to the folks and try to identify.

The doors of AA aren't locked and if you don't see any benefit to staying then your old life will be cheerfully refunded as you leave the building

All the best.

If, when you want to stop and you can't stay stopped, this is the severity of alcoholism.

Get to a meeting, listen to xa-speakers.org (I suggest Sandy B. Saturday Morning Live series), read about other methods (wash has it's own website--Rational Recovery, SMART, AVRT, SOS, Life Ring, Power to Quit, Women for Sobriety, AA) and maybe choose a method and work it well.

I wish you a wonderful sober journey!
