New to site.

I just came across this site and decided to check it out. I am in my 60s and have never really had a problem with alcohol until the last 6 or 7 years. It is a problem now and I have had several false starts at quitting in the past year. So far, this has not affected my job or health but has put some real strains on my marriage since my wife is a non drinker.

I could use any advice on getting motivated.

You give us too much power, Roger. Nothing I or anyone else says is going to motivate you to quit. That all comes from within. I think you know this. But if you put it on us, and we fail to "motivate" you, well then, you can keep drinking. That's how the addicted brain works.

All I can suggest is read a ton of threads here on the forum. If anything resonates, if you get the sense that you have a drinking problem, perhaps you'll motivate yourself.

I can say this. If you have a problem with alcohol, it will get worse.

It's never too late to make positive, healthy
changes in our lives no matter how old we
are. I was 30 when I entered rehab/recovery
back in August 1990 and here I am in my
50's and feel as young as I ever have. Sobriety
has given me a wonderful purpose in life and
that allows me to wake up each sober day
filled with gratefullness and graditude.

I opened my ears and mind to all the knowledge
and tools offered to us in a program of recovery
and have applied and incorperated them in my
every day life and affairs.

There are promises and rewards granted to us
that will come true as time goes by and we remain
sober and pass on our own ESH - experiences,
strengths and hopes of what our life was like
before, during and after our drinking careers to
others struggling with addiction just like us.

So, on that note, i say welcome to recovery and
a happier way of living life addiction free. :)

I know I have a problem and have known it for several years. I also realize that, change must come from me. I meant I was looking for help from those in the forum, not for some type of magic.

Hey Roger.

You've come to the right place. Clearly you know you have a problem or you wouldn't be here, right?

Just dive in and start reading and/or posting. There is a February thread on this particular forum you might want to join in on and many other forums that provide great insight and experience.

Lots of sober time here, Roger.

Hang in there. I'm so glad you're here.

AA worked for me when all else had failed. Give it a try I think you will like it.

Welcome to SR Roger :)

I had many, many false starts too. Too many to count. I learnt about AVRT here and that really helped me to make the decision and stick to it. Even just the crash course online gave me a really good jump start. There is information on it in the secular connections here too x
