Trouble finding a meeting

Hi, I am on the AA meeting directory and I am having trouble finding a meeting that suits me. Surprisingly there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to choose from and the ones that sound good say "closed" and I have no idea what that means. Can I not go there? Thank you

Closed just means not open to non-alcoholics. If you have a desire to stop drinking that is the only requirement for a closed meeting

Texas is loaded with meetings. Just google "Your town, TX AA meetings". Even in small town I have found meetings.

When I was in rehab there were a lot of us who did not know we could go to closed meetings. I wish they would change that designation to something that would not keep people away.

You can tell which meetings suit you based on not being there??

Unless it's an all gender meeting and you aren't that gender, getchurself to a meeting and see what it's about--open or closed, there are no AA police, just a bunch of alkies in a room trying to save their butts

The only meeting that isn't good is the one you're not at.

Thanks everyone. I guess I was being picky. I am limited though because I need child care and not many have it.

Why not look at other methods of recovery? All of them have their own website.

Rational Recovery
AVRT
SMART
Women for Sobriety
Life Ring
Power to Quit

Sometimes the meeting posted on the web are outdated.. Call the local hotline in your area, they can point you in the right direction.. Glad you're going to a meeting!!

Lily, if any are at churches, you might want to call them and see if they have childcare.

Yes, you can go to closed meetings, I don't why they call them closed, to this day, everyone still goes to them.

If you don't like one meeting, try another, and maybe a different place, eventually you'll find the right one for you.

Thanks everyone, i was getting a little discouraged looking at the AA site. I will call tomorrow and also check out all the alternatives. I am still feeling really serious about beating this and I am going to do what ever it takes. There is a rehab center really close to me. closer than any meeting I have found. I dont want to spend the money but if it comes down to it I will. It worked for me before for a long time I just didn't stick with the program after years. Thanks again everyone.
