I had a fool for a sponosr

My old sponsor was so awesome. She was a nice lady....

She understood me and was always on my side.........

She told me I was right even when I was clearly wrong......

She said I could skip meetings back then--after all, I had a couple years of not drinking under my belt.......
She said I had prayed so often in the past that I could scale back........

She said I didn't need to fellowship , that I was fine by myself ...

She said I knew enough about my alcoholism that I was safe ....

She said it's ok to work at a restaurant that serves booze....

What happened? I got drunk. Then, I realized it's not a good idea to sponsor myself, Only a fool sponsors themself...........

I can't possibly reason with myself. I have messed up thinking.......

Until I was able to get completely honest with another woman in A.A., my sobriety was limited and, at best, precarious....

I had to learn the hard way...

Since then, I have begun a new journey into the Twelve Steps. But this time, I am relying on my Higher Power to lead me through, along with help of my sponsor......
"Sponsor: a person who makes himself or herself responsible for another (Oxford Dictionary).".......

I know my sponsor is not responsible for me...

A sponsor-Guides you through the 12 steps.
Offers you a special friendship.
Is sympathetic without encouraging self pity.
Listens to your side of the story......

Accepts you as you are.
Is a sounding board for your ideas......

Gives a lift to your bruised ego.
Is open and honest with you......

Share her experiences with you.
Encourages you to examine your choices.
Encourages you to "Keep the focus on you.".......

Helps you to locate your emotions.
Encourages you to make as many meetings as possible.
Encourages you to have more than one plan.......

Encourages you to have a positive attitude
Encourages you to "Live in the Day."
Encourages you to remember you are human........

Discusses with you how the Serenity Prayer will work.
Discusses with you how slogans will help you get through the day.......

Discusses alcoholism as an illness with you.
Discusses literature with you.
Discusses The Program..........

Discusses how to better communicate with others.
Recommends making a gratitude list.
Reminds you to work the Twelve Steps.
Supports you as much as a human being can........

One more thing, if she is really good...
She won't co-sign your bull sheet...

So Call your sponsor you help her as much as she helps you.

When I first met my sponsor, he told me that I would help him more than he could ever help me. It made no sense to me then. Now I have the honor of sponsoring several men, and what my sponsor told me makes total sense. Tis truly better to give than to receive.

Awesome post. And a great headline, too!

Great to hear you found someone to work with.

I put off getting a sponsor until the last minute too. Then when I found how great it was he couldn't get rid of me !!

One extreme or the other ........

I was told I would receive more than I gave ... more than I deserved. They were right.

All the best.
