It could be a number of things. What did he die from? What was his family situation like?
That's like saying, "My aunt so and so died, how do you reckon she died?"
How do you expect me to come up with an answer to that question?
I know I'm smart, but I can't turn straw into gold my friend.
I wasn't looking for an answer Squizz.
That was my point actually.
my friend died directly from his drinking, only drinking for a period of weeks every year.
I drank all year round for 5 years...and didn't die.
It leaves me humbled and helps me realise there's so much I just don't know.

I honestly doubt that without any help anyone with a drinking problem could go one year without drinking.

Alcohol does not care what you call it or what you think you are if you drink enough for long enough it will kill you regardless of if you are an abuser, binger, alcohol dependent..
I spent years in denial because of a word alcoholic now I know that it does not matter what I call it all I do know is it wants me dead!!

Of course! You don't have to be an "alcoholic" to have a drink problem. What's in a name? It's like a spectrum and also everyone is different to a degree. It's not like suddenly someone hangs a sign on your neck and calls out, "Congratulations! You're an alcoholic!" What's important is what's been happening (there are checklists for that) and whether something has to be done about that to keep more things from happening. Were you drinking to "self medicate" or to socialize? Sounds like there may have been a bit of self medication. Being a doctor for yourself is always a risk.
