I'm looking for things to do (outside of support groups/sponsor stuff) to help me with avoiding drinking...

I could use any ideas you have.

Welcome Turtle,
I stopped drinking in June. I made plans to be out of the house when I usually opened a bottle of wine. I took long walks and ran errands. I did quite a bit of walking in the early days

Working with clay. Making wood sculptures. Jigsaw puzzles. Running and working out. Backpacking for many days. Biking. Going back to school. Cutting wood. Building things out of wood. Sewing projects. Reading. Restoring cars. Working with fiberglass. New lovers. Travelling. Tanning.

Other stuff too. Tried everything I could think of.

I spent hours and hours at the gym.. ate up time and cleared my mind and made me sleep really well. After a bit and some recovery work I didn't have to distract myself from myself anymore and I eased off a bit.

Walking a LOT!

And, volunteer work with women living on the street. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

Exercise, riding my bike, exerting energy. Getting out of the places that trigger me in general. I like water, ocean and lakes too a lot.

You wouldn't believe the amount of food I burned trying to learn to cook, my neighbor suggested I put the fire department on speed dial, .

Also, like others, the gym helped work off those burnt calories, along with walks and shopping for food to replace the burnt dishes,.

When I was really in dire straights, a few calls to others in recovery never failed to make me feel better, but I'm still wondering why they always declined my dinner invitations......hmmm.
