AA Meeting
AA Meeting
Today I went to my first AA meeting. I seems surreal to me that this is happening in my life. I feel sad, anxious, scared but also relieved. It went pretty well, although I cried a lot of the time. The thought of never drinking again is so overwhelming to me. But as I've already learned, I need to take it one day at a time. I hope for my sake and the sake of my family life it helps me.

Welcome to SR DFU....When I went to my first meeting....It was the start of getting honest with myself...And others in recovery. I also knew I had committed to something...Change. 17 months later it was the best thing I've ever done for myself. Glad you are here...Be sure and check out the 12 step forum.
Good for you, DFU! You've made a wise choice.
A nickel's worth of free advice regarding AA: Speak up at the meetings as much as possible. Let people know you're new. Share whatever is on your mind, even if it's a little off-topic. If you share, people will approach you after the meetings with advice or encouragement, some will want to give you their number, and you'll get a good start on building a support network. The step work in AA is very important, but the fellowship is equally important. There's no step that's going to answer the phone at midnight when you're feeling like giving in and heading to the bar. Let those who have gone before you help you. They're very willing to do it. After all, the 12th step is how they stay sober, so they need you as much as you need them.
Best of luck to you.

One day at a time i the only way you can do it.
Thinking of the future or even tomorrow is to overwhelming.
The firt meeting is the hardest one to walk into.
Try not to let the spirituality aspect turn you off if you're not particularly religious like.
I really have let that turn me off and it's had very negative effects for me. I/we need to stick to open frame of mind that not everyone who waked into AA was spiritual they found it along the way.
Best of luck to you

You sound just like me! Went to my first AA meetings this week after getting my first DUI. I am so overwhelmed with the thought of NEVER drinking again. It's almost like I can't imagine how my life will ever be enjoyable without my best friend vodka. Everyone tells me it gets better and I did feel better sitting in those meetings. For now, it really is a day at a time. Take care of yourself and good luck!

Welcome home, your right where you belong..
I glad you went and listened.. Those feelings are crazy at first. I definatley relate to saying good bye to my Higher Power Alcohol.. And finding a new one.. Just keep it simple little by little..
One thing that really helped me was my sponsor had me right a dear jane letter to my best friend alcohol.. Its pretty cool because if I were to re write it today it would be a lot shorter than it was then...
