What is a blackout?

Is this passing out? I'm just curious...I always felt too sick before any "blackouts"

For me it was the point where I was highly intoxicated and still functioning, although I seem to be the only one who doesn't remember what really happened, I have NO memory.

I know of people who drove and had horrible consequences (auto accidents where others were killed due to their behavior/DUI) during a blackout.

They do not remember anything about specific events at that point in their drinking.

For drinkers, blackout is a memory blackout. You stay conscious, you just don't remember what you did.

People have a lot of horror stories about what they have done and what has been done to them during a blackout.

Are you experiencing blackouts?

My take on it.

It's when you brain stops recording short term memory because your Alcohol level is so high that it's blocking neuro transmitters

Blackouts are scary indeed. There is a difference between blacking out and passing out. As mentioned above an alcoholic is still concious during a blackout, but has no memory of what is going on. Its not fun coming out of a blackout with no idea of how you got wherever you are.

Thanks for the explanations! No, I don't think I've experienced them...at least not that I remember...that might be an oxymoron. My problem is/was drinking every night and wanting to stop and never being able to...I'm on 10 days now

It's a highly unnerving event that alcoholics experience where much of the harm and shame to our lives emanates from.

The ability to argue, fight, order drugs, have sex, and completely function for hours this way with out one shred of memory the next day is a blackout. Sometimes no matter how hard I try to remember. Sometimes being shown a video. Sometimes seeing the trails on my pc of what I did. These events are sad.

The shame... The not knowing... The pain from marks and bruises.... The embarrassment to ourselves and others.... Are the aftermath of blackouts.
