What desperate thing did you do to be able to drink alcohol?

What desperate thing did you do to be able to drink alcohol?

What desperate thing did you do... to be able to drink alcohol?

I have so many and some popped in my head today. I try not to get upset about these memories and instead use these memories to remind myself I CANNOT drink. EVER.

Some are:

I had no extra money till payday and I knew I would go into withdrawal without alcohol so I hocked my white gold class ring at a pawnshop and bought enough alcohol to get me to payday.

I stole alcohol from the home bars of family members.

I drank cough medicine when I ran out of alcohol.

I hid alcohol under the bed when I was an overnight guest at friends homes.

I went without food so I could buy alcohol.

I had my cable and landline turned off by the companies because i did not pay the bills so that I could buy alcohol.....

I don't honestly know what's worse. I almost always had money for alcohol, which puts your bottom at some arbitrary place where you drink rivers of booze until your body fails you.

I think the worst thing that I did for alcohol was drive drunk, sometimes long distances, for more.

I drank mouthwash...that was pretty gross. Raiding and drinking disgusting liquor that I had never even heard of...

Hmm I am sure there are more even more degrading that I can't remember offhand.

Yeah I as well had no electricity for two weeks in lieu of not drinking or using. Because at that time, that was NOT an option.

Glad to be done with drink.

Hmmm..... let's see. I deposited empty check envelopes into my bank's ATM machine. Got away with it once, they weren't too happy the second time. Needless to say I had to find a new bank.

Also, one time I decided to leave my ATM card at work, that way I wouldn't be able to drink in the evening. So of course after counting my change and getting 5 or 6 beers in me, I thought it would be a great idea at 2 in the morning to scale the gate of my work and try to break into my office. Luckily I wasn't successful or caught.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I am EXTREMELY lucky that I have no criminal record.

I'm pretty ashamed to admit some of my reasons but.....

I had packed beers in my purse and took them to work secretly drinking on the job and being wasted at the end of the day.

I was always a closet drinker and mean that literally that I'd stash 12 packs in my closet and drink secretly from my roommates. Yea, even went as far as downing p*ss warm beers.

Proud to say that those days are long gone.

I stole booze from friends, family, even work after a party.

Drank rubbing alcohol once.

Abandoned my sister to go drink when she needed me.

Drank in the shower, bath, in the closet, garage, tool shed, etc.

Drank at school.

Flirted with men I had no interest in so they would buy me drinks at the bar.

Got jobs at places where I knew I could work hungover / drunk.

Went to the hospital for dehydration and drank the next day.

Drank after a blackout suicide attempt.

Got arrested driving drunk.

Drank and then swam into the Pacific Ocean at 3am until I swam so far out I couldn't see the shore and almost drowned myself.

Phew! Good thread! Needed to be reminded of my reasons for being SOBER today. Wow my life is so different now. Thank GOD.

Done many of the above also.

Hid alcohol down my street in a pile of leaves. Set my alarm for 3am, walked down and retrieved the booze, drank it-to avoid detection. Many times.

Drank mouthwash, vanilla, hand sanitizer

Spent my sister's inheritance from my mother.

Drank out of stranger's glasses.

Stole alcohol from others' homes.

Much more, I'm sure.

Picked booze or drugs over life necessities many times. Even picked booze or drugs over the people I should have cared about.

So many family engagements missed. I stopped being invited or included in many of them because I couldn't be trusted to either show up or behave at them.

But heck, I don't have to do any of that anymore. I get to be in recovery today. Many people do not get this far. Important for me to remember that. Sobriety is a GIFT, definitely NOT a right.

I've done many things. What have I done lately?

Checked into detox last Sunday with BAC within an inch of a coma. First morning of detox couldn't walk so had to use the bedside potty where I had a serious case of the *****, complete with massive gas. The nurse stood right there and watched. Humiliation.

First night of detox, still had the craps and pooped my pants in the middle of the night and had to ask for new underwear. More humiliation.

Second day of detox, checked out AMA because all I could think of was getting to my next drink. Actually proud of myself.

Second night after checking out of detox, went home and drank myself silly until the next evening. Heaping on the humiliation.

Checked myself back into detox.

Listened to the doctor. Finally. Proud.

Sober 4 days. Even more proud.

I would keep bottles hidden in my car, in the garage, in the closet or any other place I could think of. If no one saw me drink, they wouldn't know how much I drank until I passed out.
Can't hide that.

That's me! Drove drunk, to get more beer, hit the curb, blew out a tire and did 1400 bucks worth of damage. I changed the tire at a convenience with a city cop inside...damn lucky I wasn't locked up! Of course I drove to another store and got an 18 pack....dumbass!
