The United States Supreme Court (along with a dozen states' supreme courts and federal cicuit courts) has ruled, in Griffin v. Coughlin that AA is religious rather than spiritual.
I realize that this website is international and not limited to the United States but thought I'd help out with the US side of things.

the OP who started this thread should be able to read through the threads and see what sections follow the AA or Secular lead along with various discussions.
How did it go for night #2 Nostalgia? even if you did not stay sober, you're welcome to talk to us anytime....sometimes the weekend can be a big trigger, what did you do on a Friday night?

“beliveing (sic) in God doesnt (sic) make a (sic) anyone/anything religious”
Do you even know the etymology/definition of the word “religious”? Proper AA fits it perfectly. True, if you do the athiest version of the 12 steps you wouldn't fit the bill—but you couldn't do the steps in their entirety either. (Hint: a door knob can't respond to prayer)
I'm not being critical. I just don't get why AAers deny the religious element. Religion is not a dirty word.
I'm amazed how often we're ending up at this same place lately.

In response now to the original poster - no, happily this website is not religious in nature and we are happy to have you. I am also an atheist and while I have attended AA for quite some time (since 1978, sober continuously since 1992), I have had to do a significant amount of mental gymnastics to get around the religious aspect of it. That said, there is much that isvery good and helpful in AA - enough that this alcoholilc was able to find a new way of life through it. There are alternatives today that you might find more helpful, alternatives that weren't available or widely known about when I first arrived. Whatever you choose - I wish you the best.
