Young Adults In Recovery

I'm kind of just snow balling on TrixMixer's "Old Timer's In Recovery" but I thought it might be cool to have a Young Adult's thread. I'm 31 so I still hope I qualify ;) Although I'm a huge kid at heart. I know that it's tough to find people between the ages of 21-35 or so that have any desire to get sober. At least in my experience it has been. Anyway, if this idea doesn't take off - no biggie. Thought I'd give it a go though.

I'm 26, like this idea! Nothing more to add for now, so I'll wait for someone else to jump in ;)

I'm 33! Can I be considered part of the youngsters group? I just got I.D.'d at the casino last night if that helps me get in the club at all?
:c031:

Born 8/11/1983. Sober 7/25/2009.

I'm 25 :) got sober when I was 24. I love reading of others getting sober young.

JJay 11-23-2012 03:58 PM

Wow, this worked out better than I thought!

And 33 is definitely a fitting age for this group :)

Anyone here have a more difficult time as soon as Friday evening hits? It seems like my brain KNOWS it's the weekend and these were prime partying hours for me back in the day. I used to go clubbing Thursday, Friday and Saturday and still work as an insurance agent 8-6 Monday through Saturday. It was brutal. I don't even remember being at work half those days. Anyway, it's always a little tougher for me on Fridays and Saturdays.

Yes! Love this idea. I'm 25.

Luckily my boyfriend and a handful of my other friends are not really drinkers (I was always considered the crazy party-girl). I miss my drinking friends, though. I've been avoiding them completely, and at this point I am not even sure what I would talk about with them, because all I want to talk about is staying sober.

I am 27...as you can already see from just a few posts, young people are very common in recovery! It's becoming more of a normal thing, as young people are realizing their addictions are out of control at such a younger age. Likewise our addictions also got out of control a lot quicker.

I attend a young people's meeting every Tuesday night. There are at least 20 people in the room every single week. Quite remarkable, actually. :)

I went to a Young People's meeting once about a year ago. It was a little strange. It seemed like no one quite knew what to do and no one really took control of the meeting so it kind of just bounced around all over the place. I'm definitely not saying yours isn't great and that there aren't awesome ones around - just that this one was a little hectic.

I can see the potential for that to happen. However, most of the young people I hang around are actually very serious about their recovery. The average length for the group is well over a year.

You should come to Chicago and check it out. :)

Count me in! 26 yrs old and this time around sober 47 days.

If I had the money I'd be on the next flight out :)

As far as this thread goes I think it should be used for whatever you want to talk about. Talk about your recovery, what music you like, what movies or TV shows you like, your favorite sports teams. Anything, really. I think it'll be good 'cause we all seem to be within 5-7 years of each other so we probably share a lot of similar interests.

I'll start with a random, non-important thing about me: I just started watching "American Horror Story". I'm only four episodes in and it's creeping me out! This rarely ever happens with horror movies/TV shows for me. Most I find pretty lame and pathetic.

Fernaceman 11-23-2012 04:26 PM

I heard that is a really good show. I'll have to add it to my list. Anyone know if it is on Netflix?

My current shows are: Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and I'll blame the woman for these next ones: Kardashians, Switched at Birth, Revenge, and Pretty Little Liars. I have managed to sit through all of the last four, somehow. LOL :)

eveval 11-23-2012 04:35 PM

Oh! I just started watching nip/tuck with my guy, same creator as American Horror Story. I'm am a little nervous to check out AHS, I get creeped out real easy.

I also love: Parks and Rec, The Office, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mad Men, and The Walking Dead.

Music-wise, this song has been helping me out so much recently,

Anyone else have songs they listen to that they relate particularly to their struggle with alcohol and trying to stay sober?

eveval 11-23-2012 04:36 PM

I had to submit the link to the song in this post, because before I didn't have enough posts, apparently!

The song: Rilo Kiley - A Better Son/Daughter - YouTube

I feel your pain on the Friday night thing. What actually might be worse for me is Saturday and Sunday. Friday I work all day, Saturday and Sunday I don't and my crazy little alcoholic mind starts scheming (surprisingly early in the day) about getting some beer........I've had sober weekends, but not in awhile.....but this is my weekend:c031:I'm going to do it, no drink, no drugs.....we can do this!!! Go youngsters go!!!! LOL!

Casmasta 11-23-2012 04:44 PM

Yay! I'm 33! I still feel like a young'n. (probably because i'm emotionally stunted at 13!!! Ahahahaha! :/ )

I like this idea.. I find it interesting when folks decide to get sober young..
It makes me wonder what my life might have been like had I done the same.
But I guess you could do that with any dumb choice you've made in your years. :)

Anyway.
I love American Horror Story, Walking Dead, New Girl, Game of Thrones..

As far as music goes, I'm currently listening to Sleigh Bells and Purity Ring a lot.
Music is kind of always moving for me.
I stick on one album for a week or two, then move on to another..
I just saw Passion Pit, and Glen Hansard..
And recently bought tickets to see Muse.

Probably why I don't listen to much classic rock, or stuff like that. I've heard it too much over the years. (but zeppelin is my fave band of all time. go figure.)

I could go on and on about obscure bands I love, but I'd come off way more pretentious and hipstery than I want you guys to know I am. Ha!

I have faith that you can do this, Jules. Do you have any additional support besides SR? Are you working a recovery program like AA, Smart, or Rational Recovery?

My brain starts scheming as well. I woke up this morning and my mind was like..."Hmm it's 10 am on a Friday that you don't have to work, getting drunk would be a great idea right now. Oh how FUN it would be."

What's important for me to realize is that the above statements are all LIES!!! It would be fun for *maybe* a little bit, if that. Then I would realize that the consequences for my actions would start to outweigh the positive. And I would also have to immediately start making up a plan of lies for why I am acting the way I am because I wouldn't want anyone to know I was drinking. Wow, what a pain in the arse it would turn out to be.

In the end, I know I would get caught, because I am somehow the worst person in the world at hiding my use.

I opted to play Xbox instead for a couple hours. :)
