Where did all the elves go?
Where did all the elves go?
My mother used to tell me on thanksgiving that Santa would send an elf to every boys home. He hide all around the house. Watched me and reported back if I was good or not.
I was duped.
Duped into being good!
So here's this little kid peaking into his closet looking for elves.
No... I never did get any less gullible. Nor do I want to be.
So how did I grow to become a relatively sane man looking into cupboards for booze and drugs I hide? Where did the elves go?
This year will be my first sober holiday season in well over a decade.
I promised myself that starting Friday morning I would look for the elf everyday.
It will be to remind myself of the wonders of a free heart and mind that I looked away from for so long.
They never left me. I left it.
Couldn't hurt could it? And god help me if I find em!

Thats a fabulous post Ken!
I tell my 3 year old that if we see anyone dressed in red or green, it means they probably work for Santa and are keeping an eye out for good behaviour from little boys and girls all year round. So it works even in August!
I agree totally with your post.
How did we change into what we became.
I also wonder how did it come to celebrating everything with a drink?
When did we stop challenging ourselves to learn something new, try something out of our usual routine, be interested in achieving a goal and just accept the poor productivity that sitting with an alcoholic drink brings?
I am going to imagine you wandering around your home all day shouting 'elves, where are you?'.
And remember if you bump into anyone wearing red or green...be on best behaviour!!!!

There's always one.....!
Perhaps your reminder to behave is the sound of gentle tinkling of bells...must mean Santa's having a quick drive over your neck of the woods in his sleigh to double check!

I will.... Darn. I have been more good than bad over the years!
That's great about your little one. Enjoy the season with him.
I have such an open heart for this year. I want to give myself forgiveness and love.
It's been on my list for years but I never seem to get it.
Forgot I needed to actually give it to myself to get it.
Take care!

Beautiful post Weasel!
I too often wonder this too...
Because of my job, I am with children all day long. It is interesting to watch how they cope, solve problems, and face fears... all obviously without reaching for a substance. I see so much optimism and resilience. You're right Weasel, it's within us, it just gets lost. The definition of the word "recover" is "to get back, regain, retrieve", literally to find what was lost.
Such beautiful words...thank you

Ken, I love this...bringing back that magical feeling about Christmas you had as a child...
My first year of "being good" as well. Hoping to reclaim some of the magic in exchange for the spiked eggnog and morning after holiday parties head scratching.

We have this same Elf on a Shelf who travels back to the North Pole every night to report to Santa. The kids run to look for him each morning. He came early this year because one of my daughters had a holiday themed birthday party, and he showed up at the door. Maybe I should consider him keeping an eye on me as well!!!
What a WONDERFUL thread!!!!!!
I have two T-shirts that say I believe, do you? The one T-shirt is just
a white one with black lettering that I still wear to AA meetings periodically.
The other one is a pale Aqua and underneath the printed word is a picture of Santa
and his sleigh, and I wear it periodically from Thanksgiving to Christmas, lol
Your thread reminded me to get that second T-shirt out and ready, lol Also, time
to get the grand kids looking for the elves again!!!!
Love and hugs,
