I've been sick for the past week

I have 50 days without alcohol, I've been taking pretty large doses of Benadryl at night to help me sleep

Does this ruin my sobriety?

Hi soberbrah,

Only you know the answer to that, for me I need to keep to the dosage usage.

Oh really?

Might as well crack a fifth of jack Daniels then since I'm already off the wagon

Be careful with the Benadryl, soberbrah. It's really rough on the liver. Have you tried any herbal teas or other herbal remedies?

Stay well.

Love from Lenina

wasnt meant to be smug at all

How can I tell you wether your clean or not. I can only tell what works for me.

Whats really important is to not pick up and to use medication as prescribed

I edited a post seeing as it already had replies.
Try and remember we're all on the same side Brah.

For me, it's not about sober dates at all, it's about behaviour - taking over the odds doses of something is not a million miles away from what I used to do, and I'd have to think about that if it was me...

It will be ok

I wouldn't worry about it. You mite want to try melatonin it's natural and my kids dr suggested it for him. I never sleep much I'm lucky to get 6 hrs but I'm ok with it. Rember early sobriety sucks I never want to go back. If I was u I would ask my sponser. I'm on a depression med and a med for attention defecit, I'm honest with myself and my dr. I have a little time now 8 yrs. anytime I need to see a dr I always explain my situation that I'm a alcholic in recovery. But if your having trouble sleeping you mite want to watch how much coffee you consume or soft drinks with caffeine.
Best of luck

50 days without alcohol is awesome. How's the gambling working out? Did you go to Vegas?

Someone recommended Contact (an antihistamine as is Benadryl) for alcohol withdrawals, but then I researched it and found that it's a bad combo for your liver if you have a habit of drinking a lot.

I bought some Dong Quai capsules. It's the extract of the Angelica sinensis root. I've read that Angelica has been used to ease alcohol withdrawal, but there are different versions of Angelica. I'm not sure I've got the right one. It hasn't helped that I can see.

Anyway, 50 days into sobriety, you're not dealing with withdrawal, but it sucks that you still can't sleep. It takes a long time to get our bodies used to alcohol and a long time to readjust.

I suppose I do have a normal night's sleep at times, but there are plenty of nights when it's either insomnia or wanting to sleep way longer than I should... or postponing sleep, getting a second wind, then napping during the day.

Are there "normal" people out there who go to sleep at a set time, fall asleep in 15 mins., sleep for 8 continuous hours, and wake up feeling refreshed?

I guess having sleep apnea doesn't help my situation.
