Not sure what made me think of this thread, but some songs really remind me:
"Hurt" - Nine Inch Nails
"Hurt" - Nine Inch Nails
All of the album 4:13 Dream by The Cure, purely on the basis that that was what I was listening to the xmas before I quit when I was in a bad way really. I went away for a couple of days and would always overdo it when I got back home. I still struggle to listen to that album now.

"I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In" by Kenny Rogers from the film "The Big Lebowski" with Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Yes, Yes, Freedom - I still have several KK albums on vinyl. I forgot I used to play that on Sunday mornings, back when I used to recuperate from Fri and Sat nites on Sundays instead of drinking all day again on Sunday.
GREAT thread idea.
The best I've ever heard, bar none, is "Chet Bakers Unsung Swan Song" by David Wilcox. It's on You Tube. I can't post URLs yet.
Chet Baker was a jazz horn player that looked like James Dean back when James Dean was around. He sang too and became pretty popular. He was very well respected in the jazz community. That was no small feat for a white kid in the 50's.
He never did beat his addiction. In the 70's he died after falling-jumping-being pushed from a window in Amsterdam. Nobody really knows what happened to make him go out that window.
Here's the lyrics:
CHET BAKER'S UNSUNG SWAN SONG
My old addiction
Changed the wiring in my brain
So that when it turns the switches
Then I am not the same
So like the flowers toward the Sun
I will follow
Stretch myself out thin
Like there's a part of me that's already buried
That sends me out into this window
My old addiction
Is a flood upon the land
This tiny lifeboat
Can keep me dry
But my weight is all
That it can stand
So when I try to lean just a little
For just a splash to cool my face
Ahh that trickle
Turns out fickle
Fills my boat up
Five miles deep
My old addiction
Makes me crave only what is best
Like these just this morning song birds
Craving upward from the nest
These tiny birds outside my window
Take my hand to be their mom
These open mouths
Would trust and swallow
Anything that came along
Like my old addiction
Now the other side of Day
As the springtime
Of my life's time
Turn's the other way
If a swan can have a song
I think I know that tune
But the page is only scrawled
And I am gone this afternoon
But the page is only scrawled
And I am gone this afternoon
Next on the list for me is "Demon" by Keith Richards. You might think it would rock heavy but no - it's got the worn-down feeling I think so many can identify with. Also on You Tube.
Sorry for the long post but these two songs really hit the mark for me. Great idea for a thread.
