8 days

I posted a version of this in the October 2012 thread, but wanted to post here as well.

I've been on SR on and off for over a year. Have put together stretches of days staying sober, my longest were 15 days, 3 times. That's it. Now, I've had a huge amount of turmoil in my life over the last year-divorce, failing health of close family members, moving, loss of my friends and support group, so I felt entitled to drink, even though I knew it was all excuses, and the drinking was making it worse. Throughout this year+, I'd occasionally post that I was trying again, and then I'd last for xx amount of days, but go back to the wine.

Throughout this time though I kept coming back here. So, here I am at 8 days, feeling very optimistic. I know I will still be tempted, I was yesterday due to a crisis w family, and last night at a party. I did not drink.
I owe this to you guys, (shout out especially to Dee), reading all of your posts, especially the folks with 1 yr plus who still post--I get so much help from you.

So why is this time different? I'm told my counselor, I am done w drinking, he is helping me find the right box of tools to help me. I'm going to attend an AA mtg-why not?

I feel so much better-even after 8 days--anxiety is less, I have so much energy, and can accomplish so much more. No more anguished, stress filled, self-hating mornings.

Sorry this post got long, but thank you everyone, and wish me continued success!
SAM

samwitch,

I remember you! And I wish you the very best. Most of us have gone through exactly what you are going through....guess you are correct that you need to step up your game. Alcohol can ruin your life. Check you my old posts. It was a battle that I never want to go through again, and SR saved. me. Take care.

I've been on & off too but only joined here back in July. Managed 3 days (what is it about the 3 day hump?!). Recommitted 9 days ago. Not after a particularly bad binge but just out of being so bored with struggling through life either intoxicated or hungover.

Congrats on 8 days. Stick around.

EXACTLY! I'm so sick of struggling as well. Ridiculous.

Thanks....

Good job Samwitch! I know from my attempts before (day 2 right now) it was such a relief to end that struggle and think instead of, how am I going to get booze today, that I no longer need to deal with that. It was an amazing weight off my shoulders.

Great job on day 8!!

Onto day 9--I hope everyone had a great sober weekend. Mondays aren't as horrible sober, without a hangover.

Have a good week Sam. It's great waking up on a Monday ready to face the day, hangover and groggy free!

Congrats on 8 days. Yesterday was my 8 days as well and a few pieces of your post ring extremely true for me. Finally sharing with my counselor that I AM an alcoholic, willing to try something different, failing health of family member (in my case my child) making me feel "entitled" to drink.

We can and will do this.

Hi Sam,
I remember you as well. it is really heartening to see you back. I realize now the last thing I need in a crisis is a drink. You can do this Sam.

love

Sam welcome!

Wow, I could have wrote that myself except I have only been here 6 months with about 2 stretches of recovery lasting about 3 to 4 weeks for the both.

Never forget what it was like when you were drinking, and how much better it is now. I always seem to forget what alcohol has drove me to. We can do it! Thanks for posting.

Update: Day 10

Still feeling good with very few cravings.

Had a couple weird moments today when thoughts popped into my head with the most crazy reasons to drink: ie it's election day! Let's get our drink on!

WTH? It's actually kinda funny :-)
