Newcomer needs advice

My adult child just returned from a recovery program on Monday and relapsed last night after 25 days of sobriety. He is checking into a local outpatient program today at 5pm. Need advice on how to handle this situation.

I would suggest reading Alcoholics Anonymous. AKA the Big Book.
Aside from explaining the 12 step recovery program, it contains a lot of valuable information for family and friends of alcoholics. Also you may want to post on the family and friends forum. I bet you will get a lot of feedback there.

best wishes to you.

It might help you to check in with an Alanon group if you find that to be congenial. And, outside of Alanon there are no doubt other non AA support groups for friends and families of alcoholics, in addition to a support site on this SR website. Your child needs your emotional support, but not your control. Only he can effect recovery. It will work only if he does it for himself, not for anyone else. He should be the one who should be throwing the bottles away and avoiding the bars and folks who urge him to have "just one drink for old time's sake".

Hi Cinjan

I have no experience to share but I know you'll find support and wisdom here
I recommend you also look at our Family and Friends forums too to get advice from folks who've been there

Welcome to SR
