My opinion it's that looking ahead for happiness and waiting for things.

I'll be happy when I'm done paying my mortgage
If I buys this new car I'll feel really happy
Can't wait for my 2 weeks vacation, I'll be so happy then
ETC

We look at future things to make us happy, and forget to be happy in the now moment.
Humans are a strange creature...

True, we're always striving for something else. What am I in a big rush for? To get to the end of my journey?

Wow, I can identify!!! I can't speak for non addicts and I don't know how important it is to me to know what their experience is. It is reality for me though, and it has been that way for as long as I can remember... And getting wasted did cure that problem of not being able to be still and content, because, well, there was nothing more to do, or could do, LOL...

Knowledge, I think helps me. Understanding that this state of which you speak is a default position for me, helps that... awareness, you know...

I find that if I just go a little easier on myself... to just "be"... I am happier.

I would really second the exercise idea! Running is my outlet and snowboarding is my hobby. Sometimes the only way I can sleep is if I have exausted myself completely. I have also found that doing a breathing form of meditation exercise can be really helpful for slowing down and focusing on the moment. Of course that is if I sit still long enough. haha.
I actually been wondering about this too, because I am an addict of alcohol does that mean I can become a addict of something else, of always wanting more. From the reading I have been doing I think yes but not to the same degree. Still learning too. Thanks for the post!
