Sirens Call....Cold Beers in the Frig

My younger sister called to say she is in town with her husband who just got back from Afghanistan (heck of a nice guy). I was glad for the company and offered that they could stay at my place. I hadn’t spoken to them in over 2 years and NO they don’t know that I am in recovery yet. As I drove home I called to see what they wanted for dinner. They had already picked up Chinese and a 12-pack of Bud. Her husband is NOT in our club, he kicks back maybe 3 beers on a wild night, but he knows that I would kill the other 9 bottles in my old days. I came into the house and the smell of Chinese and beer drifted through the house. He explained that there was NO alcohol in Afghanistan. He drank a total of 1.5 beers and left the rest of those cold soldiers in the fridge all night…I did not sleep a wink….two times I went to “check on them” but I did not touch them. They remained there for 2 days until they left (he drank one more the next night) and I then tossed them. I was not ready to have “the discussion” with them but as I head towards three months I survived close moment. I feel stronger than ever and not having “the scene” before I was ready greatly reduced my stress. My ex-wife would never believe that I could go to sleep with polishing off everything in the frig. They used to call my name…now I have their number!

Awesome, Tesla, that's what I call flexing that sober muscle. You are the one doing the pushups now, not your addiction. You have that power over it, and you get stronger with every triumph. Well done.
