Being Sober by Harry Haroutunian, MD (pub 2013)

Another excellent resource for early recovery for all kinds of substance abuse - read it in a day! Harry is the Physician Director at the Betty Ford Center -- "using clear, straightforward language, Being Sober offers a proven path toward emotional sobriety and a rewarding new life based on gratitude, dignity and self-respect." Highly recommend it.

The best eBook that is backed by scientific research that I have read is Truth of Addiction.

I'd just like to recommend a book which isn't really in any direct way related to addiction, of any type. It's more about self respect, worth and perseverance. Now I know many, myself included tend to shy away from these "self help" books as we all have, as we do with many things, different beliefs in what there term means.

How ever.....it is just simple narrative. A Heading at the each of each page/s and a short statement to his interpretation of worth.

As I say, not directly addiction related, a lot of what he writes is what you know but perhaps you just don't practice: now, prior or perhaps later. It's a handy little book that's called me back a few times.

Can anyone recommend any books about staying sober? I know there is a booked called "Staying Sober" but it's not available on Kindle, which is really a prerequisite for me because I read at work, and have to do it covertly. (haha)

Our long list of Recovery books is at the beginning of this thread.

All the books we've all read and loved are listed. You will have to check to see if they're available as ebooks.

There are two great little books by Allen Berger that you might want to include on the list:

12 Smart Things to Do When the Booze and Drugs Are Gone

12 Stupid Things That Mess Up Recovery

Also, I noticed on the list that Suburban Junky is listed as having been written by Bill Hassan - the author is actually Jude Hassan.

"The Brain that Changes Itself" by Dr. Norman Doidge

It's not specifically about addiction, but about how we can cause our brains to change for the better.

The discovery of neuroplasticity, that our thoughts can change the structure and function of our brains, even into old age, is the most important breakthrough in our understanding of the brain in four hundred years.

Currently reading "Under the Influence". Great insight for understanding addiction. Looking forward to reading some of the above reccommendations.

Hi. I'm new here. Let's just say that I'm still working on 1st step stuff, but the reading list here is helpful. I wanted to add The Zen of Recovery by Mel Ash, which I am currently reading, as that is pretty much where my spirituality is. Thanks.

Have finished the Caroline Knapp book 'Drinking - a love story' and I found it very enjoyable, I could relate to much of the story and it was thought provoking. I have nearly finished 'Dry' by Augusten Burroughs- a very different story but an excellent read.
Part of my plan to stay sober is to immerse myself in books and make time in my day, no matter what, for reading.

And although it's not a book, there is a great film called 'Smashed' by James Ponsoldt- I watched it on an aeroplane earlier this year. Very, very interesting film.

I think the two books by Bucky Sinister should be added

Get Up: A 12 Step Guide To Recovery

and

Still Standing: Addicts Talk About Living Sober

He has a few other book's but I've only read those two. Very insightful and funny at the same time.

I just downloaded the Kindle version of Allen Berger's "12 Stupid Things To Mess up Recovery". It looks great judging from the reviews. I will give it a read! I'm at work, so why not? What is the alternative? To do work? Haha, no thanks.
