A Million Little Pieces is interesting.....for me, it was an amazing book, but it is important I think to know that even though it came out as a memoir, it is in fact fiction. James Frey went through a great deal of interrogation....publicly for doing this....

It is not a memoir. However, it is a wonderful book...I bought all of his books....loved them, unfortunately left them in Australia.....so silly, I should have organised myself better and shipped all of my books....it is very expensive though. s

Yup, it's definitely fiction.

In fact, James Frey was so hated for pulling the book off as a memoir, he disappeared. A few years later, he was resurected as Pittacus Lore. Under his new identity he wrote a series of Young Adult adventure/science fiction.

I love A Million Little Pieces. The controversy never bothered me, I still found it inspiring and just a great read. The follow up My Friend Leonard focuses on his recovery out of rehab and is just as good a read, no matter how much is fiction or not! The only caveat is because he (or should I say the protagonist?) goes it alone that might be a little too fictional for genuine recovery...

"Beauty as a State of Being: Mastering Mind and the Spiritual Path"
by Solomon Katz

Just started this book and I already have a good feeling about what it might teach me or remind me about.

It's not specifically about recovery from substance abuse -- but one could say it is still about recovery: from letting your mind get you off balance and from the mind spinning its wheels in unbeneficial ways.

Hi, I'd like to recommend "The Biology of Desire: Why Addiction Is Not a Disease" by Dr Marc Lewis, former heroin addict and leading addiction neuroscience professor and researcher.

It really taught me a lot about the biology and neuroscience of addiction, and has been hugely helpful to me in being able to overcome the shame I'd felt for so long in having this affliction.

It also discusses a more science based approach to treatment which could be very helpful to people who have struggled in traditional treatment models. This has also been very helpful to me in my own recovery.

Yeah I mean to read this. It was referenced at my recent stint of outpatient rehab.

Smile Best Book to Help You Out

I will go through some of the above ones. Only to learn some more and help others as I’m now successful, stopped drinking and started a new life. I have tried so many books, communities, and answers but hardly had they affected me. At last, that one book- My Shovel, where the girl suffered for 24 years of pain, criticism, coloring everything she did, ruining relationships, and leading to brushes with the law. It inspires me today. I can’t share the untold story here else it won’t affect you. Do check it out and I recommend it to all those suffering from alcohol, depression, and anxiety.
